ATI vs NVidia

I tend to think the internal competition of different card manufacturers producing cards with the same chips will decrease the prices only of those cards with those chips.

I also tend to think the only thing affecting prices of Nvidia powered cards in general is the overall quality and competition of Radeon based cards, not individual cards. The basic ATI cards pretty much covered the bases. Cheap (7200, 32DDR, LE), Basic (7500), VIVO, High-end (8500), AIW. It's not like ATI's product line has holes.

Regardless of the new partners, the chips still have trouble competing with Nvidia chips. The Ti200 and Ti500 basically wipe the floor in most useful benchmarks, IMHO.

Perhaps it will indirectly affect Nvidia card prices. More direct competition from ATI vs. ATI will cause a low price commodity market to evolve, forcing ATI card prices down. Since the average ATI card price is lower, it make affect Nvidia card prices. But also, if the said companies are completely leaving the Nvidia market, there will be less direct competition within the Nvidia vs. Nvidia market. I believe these are still smaller factors when compared to overall chip and driver quality and design.

Bleh.

Is Apple phasing out ATI completely? Last I checked, all of their laptops still ship with the mobile Rage 128 or Radeon. It's possible this is going to change, but the new 14" iBook they just announced still has ATI graphics.

Just wait until the GeForce 4 is released. Only about 6 more weeks. Then there will be no more talk about this 8500.

Bah. ATI. They are the kings of cheating on image quality. No perspective correct mip-mapping.. no trilinear filtering when anisotropic is enabled.. moving the LOD forward to fool gullible users into believing they are seeing more detail.

I honestly wish ATI would go out of business.

Although ATI has been bitches in the past, I have to say that I'm impressed with how they've managed to be at least a small contender in the end.

Great, more shitty Radeon I cards on the market. (note: the 7500 is a rebadged Radeon I. The 8500 is the brand new next-gen Radeon). Just what we needed!! Thanks ATI!!

I think the biggest thing that hurts ATI is they rarely release driver updates.

I think it's great, but I'm totally suprised that Hercules is gonna be putting out Ati cards too. No, they aren't on that list but there was a supposed announcement today. Blah, no I don't have a link

but the price/performance ratio of the athlon chips greatly outweighs the benefits of the p4 =P
