ShackDSL = FREE GEFORCE!
by Steve Gibson, Jan 08, 2002 6:44am PSTWell here's something you dont see every day. A 'after you already bought something' promotion. In cooperation with Speakeasy and NVidia, every ShackDSL customer who signed up for SDSL service since November is getting a FREE GEFORCE3 Ti200 from NVidia. In addition, for the folks who got the cheaper IDSL or RADSL lines, you're going to get a GeForce2 MX400. How bout them apples? If you want your FREE GEFORCE3 or GeForce2 card because you've signed up for ShackDSL, you must email me your Full name, address, and the username you are using with ShackDSL account. If you don't contact me with this info you get no card. :( Oh, and one more thing, Anyone who wishes to sign up for ShackDSL for the next 3 weeks will be eligible for the same offer. Sign up for a SDSL and you get a GeForce3, sign up for IDSL or RADSL and you'll get a GeForce2. If you're not sure your address qualifies, fill out the form at www.shackdsl.net and it will test you instantly.

This is a bit risky for you Steve it seems. If something goes wrong many people are gonna bitch to you and what can you say? "Sorry guys, Speakeasy are being jerks?" It seems you're a front man but have no power if something goes wrong..(?) And dealing with down internet and customer support is a small slice of hell, we all know that.
Of course, everything could go great too right?

Should Speakeasy DSL become available in your area within a year of the setup of your Speakeasy dialup, Speakeasy will apply 50% of the dialup fees you have paid to subsidize the cost of your DSL installation and hardware.
The problem is, I live in the north bay, in the Sonoma/Marin counties north of San Francisco who get to sit and watch as San Francisco gets everything and we don't. Move up here and I'd strongly consider it. But it took so long just for the Phone Company's broadband to get up here, I seroiusly doubt wether SpeakEasy will get coverage here within a year, and thus no 50% deal.
There's a reason that the "hardware" costs are $200+ and the "install" costs are $175 (or, when the install costs are free, the hardware bumps to $299).
GeForce3 Ti200's are under $200. The initial cost of just getting these services into your house is more than double that. Not to mention that the services were originally considered overpriced by many people who read this site (the original news post: http://www.shacknews.com/funk.y?comments=17312 ).
Although, if your parents are going to pay to get this, its not a bad deal for you to get a new video card out of the deal too. But with my own money, I'd stick to the RBOC's DSL packages.

Don't forget that if the rumours are true, the GF4 lineup would replace most of the lineup we have now (the non-mobile NV17 would take the place of the bottom-end)... makes sense in my mind, and isn't a bad bargain for us gaming types :)

I can't use any of them for future DSL service. The providers insist that I purchase new modems with their service. This just irks me to no end.

hehe j/k
I'd sign up for this, but unlike Siberia, rural Alabama, and the middle of the Congo, suburban (actually exurban) Minneapolis = no DSL if you are unlucky enough to have SPRINT as your p.o.s. local telco.
Also, our cable company is uninterested in supporting any internet access - why should they bother upgrading equipment when they can continue to milk their monopoly cable service customers for the same ol' crud?

Sorry. Had to vent. :)
