An Intel Apple?
by Steve Gibson, Jan 06, 2002 2:53pm PSTHere's one for the evening that'll make you wonder. There have been some pretty strong rumors about the big stuff coming from Apple but it looks like we're getting somewhere. It's pretty much a given that they will announce the new LCD iMact with the revelation that Apple has been buying 15" LCD screens in bulk from Taiwan for the past month. Also there is the whole iWalk thing that may or may not be true. But the latest gossip (Ok a couple days ago) is the possible Apple switch from Motorola to Intel.
Perhaps the most compelling buzz surrounding the upcoming show, however, is the possibility that Apple might move its platform from the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) PowerPC chip to Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) chips. Although Enderle does not expect Jobs will surprise attendees with such an announcement, switching to Intel could transform Apple's position in the marketplace by removing the cost disadvantages it presently faces relative to other PC makers. It seems like a pretty slim chance, but the the whole OSX migration by Apple it's a feasible possibility that would really shake things up. Considering how hyped up Apple seems to be about things (more so than usual) the announcement of a LCD iMac or a PDA just doesnt seem deserving, there could be something more.

Just look at id spending time with an Apple port. Now if they could dedicate all that effort to the win32 port, I think it would be a lot better off.

Coding on Doom3? Nope, dicking around with an Apple patch.

There it is: a flat-panel iMac G4 with DVD Burner and iPhoto starting at $1299. There's also a pic of it on the main page.

LCD iMac - a given. Will most likely have a screen that can be unplugged from the basestation and carried around your house as a webpad, wirelessly communicating with the main computer part. Gates expected to announce something similar at CES in his keynote that night. Jobs moved his keynote from Tuesday to Monday because of it's "impact" - so this is quite likely.
iWalk - the biggest fakedy fake fake you've ever seen. If you can't see that in the videos, you need help. Not to say that Apple aren't going to release a PDA, but that's a market in serious trouble right now - so not a good time for Apple (the invented the product genre, isn't that enough?). This also means buying Palm (another rumour) is probably a bad idea.
iPhoto (or iPicture) - Similar to iTunes, iMovie and iDVD, but for your pictures. A free, simple, art program. Fills in a gap in Apple's lineup (music and video, but no pictures?) and in development for a while. Apparently pisses off Adobe quite a lot because they think less people will buy Photoshop, but you'll probably see it tomorrow.
AppleWorks - Apple's very own Office killer. Cheap, simple, does everything most people require in an office suite. Been around for a while, but I think an upgrade could be on the cards.
PowerMac's with G5 processors - 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6GHz. Would be surprised to see faster. Wouldn't be surprised to see them announced tomorrow and shipping from Feb 1st.
iBook - processor upgrade, combo-drives as standard. Different colours a possibility, but that would surprise me.
Intel CPU's - Highly unlikely. Would mean a total shift in business strategy. Would no longer be a hardware company, but just a software company competing on level ground with Dell, Compaq etc instead of in their own market. Would also be competing with Microsoft and Windows with OS X. Which means Microsoft would pull Office, which they can't afford (unless they do release a new AppleWorks that can read all the Office files). Moving away from Motorola to IBM is also unlikely, as IBM are only just touching 1Ghz with their G3 chips, while Motorola should be up to 1.6 in production with their G5's (and soon way beyond 2Ghz).
Secret Product - There'll be something new tomorrow that nobody expects. Not a PDA. Not a digital camera. Not quite sure what, but it'll be cool.
Phew.

If they move to x86 they will have to move again to Itanium / Sledgehammer (64 bit CPUs)
That would be two moves in a short period of time
Not a good idea IMHO

"Considering how hyped up Apple seems to be about things (more so than usual) the announcement of a LCD iMac or a PDA just doesnt seem deserving, there could be something more." <-- Steve jobs was the first one to blow the lid on IT and say IT would "CHANGE TEH WORLD!" Fuck what Apple and their execs get hyped over. They're morons that can market well just because they believe their own hype.
It's an Apple + Segway. After all, Jobs was raving about it "going to change the way cities are built in the future" or something like that. I'm sure Jobs meant segways with Apples in them, and those LCD screens are going on the segway too.
