The Reznor And DOOM
by Maarten Goldstein, Jan 05, 2002 10:50am PSTIt's been speculated about since day one, and now Trent Reznor in a new Mac interview confirms he would like to work with id again on the new DOOM game. Here's his reasoning. Thanks V0lk
I've been discussing things with Id Software for Doom III. It's not formalized at this point, but it's something I really want to do. When I did Quake, we were still questioning if the audio was going to be streamed off of CD, which if it wasn't was incredibly limiting. But with as interactive as things are now, and as immersive as the engine they've been working on is graphically, and some of the program is so moody; it's like scoring a film. Yet it's much more intense than a film because it doesn't always go the same way, it has to be interactive. Plus the mood of the game is so dark and evil, it's interesting to me.

badns like:
Ministry
1000 Homo DJ's
PigFace
Revolting Cocks
Throbbing Gristle
Kraftwork
Front 242
Skinny Puppy
These were bands that help start the evolution and defining industrial music. Anyone who has been a fan for a long time or has been around the industrial scene, knows this.
As for Reznor being overrated? Isnt that a matter of opinion? Starting a thread with the line "I hate to break it to you guys.." is one that obviously tries to convince others of believing in your opinion.
to me? thats fucking dumb.

Basically, you either like Trent or you hate him. I hate him, and it might just be that he totally trashed the guy who he idolizes (but never will admit to) and my favorite musician.
Excerpt from Spin Magazine, March 1992:
Trent Reznor- "For every band that I think has something to say, like Ministry, or Meat Beat Manifesto, there's twice as many that have realized the formula for industrial music: repetitive 16th-note bass lines, snarling vocals--usually unintelligible screaming about the horrible condition of the planet or some kind of doomsday message about how shitty things are. Front Line Assembly is a textbook case of a band that---I can't listen to a fucking song, let alone an album. Just monotonous, boring uninspired bullshit. And they're far more traditional and far more exemplary of 'industrial' than NIN is."
Trent later issued an apology to FLA. I don't know what it said, so if anyone can enlighten me I would appreciate it.
Bill responded like this: (in an interview by Sandra Garcia in B-side Magazine)
"The worst thing about the Trent incident is the apology. I know he didn't write that. I think his manager wrote that. I think I have less respect for him sending that apology. If he didn't send it, I would have just thought that he was an asshole."
He continues, "I think the only person he didn't slag was Al [Jourgensen of Ministry], and why? Because Al's the kind of guy where if you said something like that about him he'd come looking for you."
Bill also considered slagging Trent in every interview he did, but realized that it would make him look like a jerk.
Even Ogre hates the guy, he is totally open to hating him and that's enough for me. The band that took everything and turned it into a clusterfuck of incredible music, Skinny Puppy, who in it's glory days I'm sure Trent was all whacking off to Bites but here he is saying Leeb (and to some extent I've seen him say shit about Ogre and the rest of the crew) is uninspired bullshit. Uh-hmmm ... who's the guy that did the fucking song for tomb raider sound track? Anyone seen that video? Yuck. Trent, is a has been ... a never was ... a total piece of ass. I think God Module or Leeb should do DOOM, hell, there is a thousand other BETTER artists I could mention for this but right now those would be my two top choices.
Trent sucks Apples dick in every interview I see. Trent just plain sucks.
My two cents, someone who knows a far lot about the industrial scene than your run of the mill "NIN IS COOL" d00d.
And no matter what I say, Trent will still be making god-awful music.

Imagine listening to Britney Spears while deathmatching because the developer is a really big fan. Actually I think I'd take Britney over Trent any day.
I want cinematic music (Zimmerman, Williams etc) not "regular" music. It shouldn't be the type of music you hear in clubs or listen to at home, it should be music specifically engineered to increase the tension. I think y ou need cinematic type music for that.

too much of XXX sucks, they have no talent, blah blah blah blah...
I will admit, I am a fan of NIN, Yes NIN's music changes with each album, but it changes
with Trent's frame of mind...the album, the Fragile is a great example of this (and a wonderful album IMHO)...
while not as aggressive as say...Broken, it is successful on its own merits,
I will agree, the quake 1 soundtrack did lack focus, but he has 3 LP's, 1 EP, and several remix albums that do nothing but the contrary.
No, NIN does NOT REDEFINE INDUSTRIAL MUSIC, but that never was NIN's scope...only to create
GOOD music
....plus if you guys REALLY hate the music, turn it off!!!!!
Looks like I won't be bothering with the in-game soundtrack again.

This message goes out to a lot of the elitists, which is pretty much everyone debating in this news article. Of course, they'll reply with "but the music (sucks/is great)!" and I don't believe that bullshit, they only listen to their own preconceptions of what they should or should not like.
Sure, maybe trent reznor is a cockface and a jerk, and he steals music from other people. Maybe he's a brilliant guy, and has changed the face of music. Does this make his music any different than it is? nope. The quality of his music is independant of the things he has done. In my opinion, the music should be experienced as if you knew nothing about how it was created.

i hate a lot of bands and musicians, but i don't HATE them really. i mean, they sound like they want him dead or something.
jeez, lighten up. i bet if the doom soundtrack is the greatest work of music ever, they'll never even give it a chance.

In my personal opinion.
That is all.
i'm glad we've all heard the soundtrack, so we can talk about how much it sucks, and especially how much it sucks as compared to the crappy game (which we've seen) it pertains to.
phew! so much sarcasm it hurts.

1. Trent is doing the music/soundtrack/whatever for the game and is trying to make it as interactive as possible. Any question as to why <insert your favorite band here> isn't doing it is moot. All that's left is the paperwork. If you don't like Trent, STFU. Turn the music off/down.
2. Trent is playing Doom III and is already working on the music.

I also like the fact that he's taking the approach of a movie score... sounds awesome
The important thing is, a soundtrack by him will be much better than the absolute SHIT they had for the Q2 and Q3 soundtracks.
