MoH SP Demo Impressions

Well a few of the bandwidth endowed folks have downloaded the Medal of Honor demo already and been playing around with it this new years day. Maarten and I both played through it and I know he seemed to enjoy it. Here's a separate thread to give props or poops to the demo. Oh yeah, I thought it was great. Absolutely wonderful job on the environment. I fired up the game and went straight to medium skill. Seemed like a good choice for a first timer with FPS experience. The sounds and music and team members were all executed beautifully. I cant recall the last time I've had a single player demo really excite me this much about a game. Here's one of those mini thumbnail rampages just because.

  • This game is great, a really good alternative to RTCW if you prefer a more realistic slant on war. Still, I say get both when MOH is available :)

What I loved most about the game was your comrades. It was so cool to start with a buddy, and then meet the others shortly after, and to have them fighting alongside you throughout. It was also nice that they could take care of themselves fairly well. Admittedly, they did stand in some stupid places sometimes, and I don't understand why they didn't pick up health, even if I had full health myself, but other than that, they were pretty convincing. I've always wanted to see good NPC helpers in an FPS game, and I think MOH has really succeeded in making the world more alive by adding them. No longer did I feel that it was just me against the game, it felt like I was part of it, not just a one man army.

I'd really like to see the team element expanded though. I felt, at times, like we weren't really working together, I was doing all the important stuff whilst my buddies just helped clear out the enemy on the ground. I'd like to see AI in future games be able to go off and do stuff by themselves, like perhaps a squadron could split up and the other part would actually be doing stuff, rather than just vanishing for a bit, at the moment, games centre too much on the player, which can take away a feeling of immersion. If the characters around you aren't able to act in the same intelligent (or unintelligent :) manner as you, it feels a bit odd. Still, MOH was fairly good here.

One of the other things that blew me away about the game was the way there was so much going on. I was doing that thing where you start to physically react to the game environment at times - especially near the end, I was trying to duck the shells from the big cannons, and getting scared as the rockets exploded around me. I think the sound was probably a major factor in the immersiveness, it sounded very meaty in general and I didn't question its believablity at all.

  • Anyway, the MOHAA:SP demo laughs and points at the retarded MP demo...tapes signs to it's back, and kicks it when it's not looking....

It's really a different game from RTCW...no zombies, ferinstance...MOH feels more realistic than RTCW...plus, I like being able to stagger the Nazis in MOH...
As far as the weapons and combat go, it's like the difference between CS and HL...MOH being CS...
The enemy AI seemed smarter when fighting in MOH, but the Wolf dudes were smarter about awareness
<BANG> RTCW:"Hey, is that someone shooting up all my buddies? Maybe I should run to the alarm?"
<BANG>MOH:"Hey, the MG guy got sniped...it took 3 shots, because he was partially covered by the MG42 and sandbags...Let me run over there to the gun..."
<BANG>MOH2:"Hey, that guy who ran over to the MG42 because the gunner got sniped, got sniped too...Lemme run over there to the gun..."
I really did like the house to house stuff, and the little mini-trenches next to the rocket launchers...

The SP demo may have changed my mind about MOH...After checking out the MP demo, I had decided almost certainly not to buy it...But now...I might...

  • Impressive. Very impressive.

All of the scripted sequences felt solid, and kept the game moving. Watching the enemy AI hid behind walls and such was fantastic. Actually, I wish my teammates would have been a bit smarter at times ;) They would take cover and such sometimes, but by the time I got to the church I was by myself. War is hell though, eh?

Gunfire sounds, and weapon feel was very good also. A German grunt would truck across the screen, and I would pop him with the Springfield, switch to the Thompson, and jump into a building for cover with more enemy fire buzzing past me. Very immersive. 2015 has my money on release day.

  • Over a really fun game. Running at 32bit color really slowed things down but once you switch to 16 you can crank all details up and the game won't chug a bit. Personally I can't tell the difference but I'm kind of colorblind.

Your squad's AI is decent and get's the job done most of the time until they repeatly cap you in your head while you try to snipe or stand infront of you when you are desperately trying to destroy the halftrack with the panzer frost. It was nice to see that when they're smart enough to find cover most of the time. Hiding in buildings, craters, behind rubble etc.

Some of the parts of the game that really got me was how simple it played and how dynamic the action felt. I played the demo many times and it always turns out different. It's cool to see peoples help get shot of if you cap them in the head (but they don't die which is a bit distracting) or the enemies fire wildly around when you stun them with your thompson and small details like that I haven't picked out yet.

Somethings that distracted me are the smoking car rubbles and the trees. You can see enemies standing behind a car through the broken windshield but you can't kill them and they seem to have xray vision when hiding behind bushes. Oh yeah your team is made out of ironmen on crack, they have insane amount of healthy to compensate for their stupidity at times.

On respawning it seems like there is limited respawning if you don't rush inside buildings to clear them. For example if you rush that house in the town where an insane amount of nazis come out from right away all you fight is a soidler and sniper upstairs but if you capture the gun post across from it tons of guys will suddenly spawn before your eyes ready to be slaughtered.

Overal a great game... oh yeah the AI doesn't throw grenades much.

  • Woah, this was pretty damn good. Played on medium, and it was pretty challenging, though I think some of that was the respawning enemies, which was kinda annoying.

The teammate stuff is great, good AI, they can take fairly good care of themselves, they follow you, hang back, duck into buildings or behind walls when under fire etc. The enemy AI also was good, you see them peering around corners, just sticking their gun around and firing off a few blind shots.

The changing environment stuff was done well. Graphics and sound were excellent, although the fog seemed very heavy, perhaps that was because I couldn't change that setting due to menu crashing problem I had.

That was the major problem I had, the menus crashing the game. I couldn't actually change any options in the game, I had to edit the config just to invert the mouse. Had a couple of in game crashes, seemed to be something to do with sound playback, not totally sure.

On the whole, well worth grabbing for those with fast connections. Modem people may want to wait until it is on the cover of the magazine or whatever. Think I'll be picking up the full game when it comes out.
