MoH SP Demo Impressions
by Steve Gibson, Jan 01, 2002 2:29pm PSTWell a few of the bandwidth endowed folks have downloaded the Medal of Honor demo already and been playing around with it this new years day. Maarten and I both played through it and I know he seemed to enjoy it. Here's a separate thread to give props or poops to the demo. Oh yeah, I thought it was great. Absolutely wonderful job on the environment. I fired up the game and went straight to medium skill. Seemed like a good choice for a first timer with FPS experience. The sounds and music and team members were all executed beautifully. I cant recall the last time I've had a single player demo really excite me this much about a game. Here's one of those mini thumbnail rampages just because.

I have a gf2mx, 1.33ghz athlon, 512meg of that fast ram stuffies, and my PC is all formatted defragged and whirling to go. Yet for some reason, I get like -25fps when I load the demo up. I think I'm actually going back in time. I think the demo opened up a wormhole in the space time continueum and the universe as we know it nearly imploded until I quit it.
All the options and detail are on the lowest possible setting, yet it still runs so slowly that it's literally, totally unplayable. I mean, gf3's are good and all, but should I have to own one just to play a game that uses the quake 3 engine, when RCTW (which looks nicer IMO) runs perfectly with my current hardware? I think not.
hopefully this is just some horrible dream, and I'll wake up, and MOHAA won't suck.
Well, hopefully it's a dream for my housemate too, who was getting even worse performance than I, as he's "only" got a p3-800.
ah well.
let's hope they get their act together, or that this demo was broken, or that something in the stars was aligned incorrectly when I attempted to play this game. otherwise this game might suck poop from the poop tree, to quote the magnanimous mr gibson

Very good demo I must say, up there with the Undying demo for sure. Great attention to detail (limping partners, etc) make it all the more entertaining.
I must say though, there are a few things I'd like to see changed or fixed before final release:
1. Health bar above your squadmates' heads. How can we tell how much health they have left before they die? Such things would be nice to know. As well, improve their AI so they are more proactive during fights, and also a bit more reactive by taking cover more often. Most of the time they just stand there and get hit in the arm while taking potshots and eventually wind up getting killed. Not too bright.
2. Running speed. Notice I didn't say WALKING speed, but there really isnt *that* great of a difference between the two right now. I'd like to see greater running speed because as it stands right now, running still feels too "slow"... like, if you had a grenade tossed at you, I can guarantee you would MOVE YOUR ASS the hell out of there as FAST as you possibly could.
3. Jumping. Why is it so "glitchy" feeling? Like, almost as if your character does a mini 50ms crouch before he jumps... very annoying.
4. Commands for Ally NPCs. Maybe I'm just used to playng CS and DOD, but I'd like to bark out commands in the heat of the moment to my comrades and have them take positions and actions as required. It would definitely add a notch to the interactivity...
5. ... Speaking of which, interactivity with the game environment, aside from manning machine guns, is fairly absent. I'd like to be able to flush that toilet, open that cupboard, use that mirror.
6. The level design and texture use is great but I can't help feeling that most of these "burnt out" houses feel more like cardboard cutouts, almost like background stage props in a theater play. DOD has some great levels featureing great looking bombed out houses... 2015 should have a look at these and improve upon them.
7. Respawning Nazis. Ok, I get the point that they are supposed to be reinforcements, but I mean come on... I think once you've cleared a section, it should remain clear until you've progressed further into the map... and I don't mean every 10 feet.
8. The Weapon sounds. The environmental/bullet whizzes/ambience is great, but as for the weapons, overall I am a tad dissapointed. They just don't seem to pack enough "punch" - not enough low end... they need more bass. And no, I don't have a shitty sound system, my Altec Lansing speakers with seperate subwoofer do the job just fine... its just that the weapon sounds in CS and DOD are much beefier sounding. I mean, just listen to the AWP from CS... now THAT is what I call power; you can feel it just by the huge "BOOM" it makes.
9. Explosions... they are weak to say the least. I would think a grenade would produce a much greater fireball, and shrapnel to boot (that is the point, isn't it?). Same goes for the rocket launcher... it needs a much greater impact explosion.
Anyways thats it for now, it really is a great game... if they were to fix these things it would definitely be one of the best the industry has seen in a LONG time... if anyone from 2015 is reading this, please consider these points as constructive criticism. Just a little more tweaking and MOH will be king of the hill.

What I loved most about the game was your comrades. It was so cool to start with a buddy, and then meet the others shortly after, and to have them fighting alongside you throughout. It was also nice that they could take care of themselves fairly well. Admittedly, they did stand in some stupid places sometimes, and I don't understand why they didn't pick up health, even if I had full health myself, but other than that, they were pretty convincing. I've always wanted to see good NPC helpers in an FPS game, and I think MOH has really succeeded in making the world more alive by adding them. No longer did I feel that it was just me against the game, it felt like I was part of it, not just a one man army.
I'd really like to see the team element expanded though. I felt, at times, like we weren't really working together, I was doing all the important stuff whilst my buddies just helped clear out the enemy on the ground. I'd like to see AI in future games be able to go off and do stuff by themselves, like perhaps a squadron could split up and the other part would actually be doing stuff, rather than just vanishing for a bit, at the moment, games centre too much on the player, which can take away a feeling of immersion. If the characters around you aren't able to act in the same intelligent (or unintelligent :) manner as you, it feels a bit odd. Still, MOH was fairly good here.
One of the other things that blew me away about the game was the way there was so much going on. I was doing that thing where you start to physically react to the game environment at times - especially near the end, I was trying to duck the shells from the big cannons, and getting scared as the rockets exploded around me. I think the sound was probably a major factor in the immersiveness, it sounded very meaty in general and I didn't question its believablity at all.

Um...how come I can unload on my allies and they don't die, I mean they are literally invulnerable. I shot that gangly crew up with about 8 Panzerfaust shells, unloaded a few clips with the CAR, sniped them in their domes. And when I ran out of all my ammo I even beat them severely about the face and neck with my trusty pistol. Oh sure they flinch and stumble but um, who said this game was realistic?

There does appear to be a bug that causes frame rates to crash, though. It's happened to me twice now, too. When I exit the game after the frame rates drop to 3, it gives some sort of allocation error message on the start-up window thing. Of course, I don't remember what it said. I sure hope this isn't a problem in the boxed version.
Even the spdevmap dont work :(

The graphics overall weren't that high caliber, the weapons models weren't that detailed and the overall textures weren't as high as we've come to see from Max Payne or RTCW. The dirt and sun light effects were cool though.
The gameplay sees alot like DoD which is fine, but I prefer a less realism, like RTCW.
I'll still probably get this game since I have virtually every fps ever made but from this demo I can say that RTCW owns it.

It's really a different game from RTCW...no zombies, ferinstance...MOH feels more realistic than RTCW...plus, I like being able to stagger the Nazis in MOH...
As far as the weapons and combat go, it's like the difference between CS and HL...MOH being CS...
The enemy AI seemed smarter when fighting in MOH, but the Wolf dudes were smarter about awareness
<BANG> RTCW:"Hey, is that someone shooting up all my buddies? Maybe I should run to the alarm?"
<BANG>MOH:"Hey, the MG guy got sniped...it took 3 shots, because he was partially covered by the MG42 and sandbags...Let me run over there to the gun..."
<BANG>MOH2:"Hey, that guy who ran over to the MG42 because the gunner got sniped, got sniped too...Lemme run over there to the gun..."
I really did like the house to house stuff, and the little mini-trenches next to the rocket launchers...
The SP demo may have changed my mind about MOH...After checking out the MP demo, I had decided almost certainly not to buy it...But now...I might...

Could have been the best FPS of 2001 :-)
All of the scripted sequences felt solid, and kept the game moving. Watching the enemy AI hid behind walls and such was fantastic. Actually, I wish my teammates would have been a bit smarter at times ;) They would take cover and such sometimes, but by the time I got to the church I was by myself. War is hell though, eh?
Gunfire sounds, and weapon feel was very good also. A German grunt would truck across the screen, and I would pop him with the Springfield, switch to the Thompson, and jump into a building for cover with more enemy fire buzzing past me. Very immersive. 2015 has my money on release day.
Your squad's AI is decent and get's the job done most of the time until they repeatly cap you in your head while you try to snipe or stand infront of you when you are desperately trying to destroy the halftrack with the panzer frost. It was nice to see that when they're smart enough to find cover most of the time. Hiding in buildings, craters, behind rubble etc.
Some of the parts of the game that really got me was how simple it played and how dynamic the action felt. I played the demo many times and it always turns out different. It's cool to see peoples help get shot of if you cap them in the head (but they don't die which is a bit distracting) or the enemies fire wildly around when you stun them with your thompson and small details like that I haven't picked out yet.
Somethings that distracted me are the smoking car rubbles and the trees. You can see enemies standing behind a car through the broken windshield but you can't kill them and they seem to have xray vision when hiding behind bushes. Oh yeah your team is made out of ironmen on crack, they have insane amount of healthy to compensate for their stupidity at times.
On respawning it seems like there is limited respawning if you don't rush inside buildings to clear them. For example if you rush that house in the town where an insane amount of nazis come out from right away all you fight is a soidler and sniper upstairs but if you capture the gun post across from it tons of guys will suddenly spawn before your eyes ready to be slaughtered.
Overal a great game... oh yeah the AI doesn't throw grenades much.

and that's quite an accomplishment.
nice work 2015.
A teammate of mine rounded a corner, walked through a door, and there's a Nazi right in front of him. He didn't shoot, instead, he raised his rifle, and decked the Nazi on the head with his rifle butt!
I couldn't believe what I saw...
I like the idea of spawning enemies if you're just sitting in one spot (hello, its wartime, you're fighting dozens upon dozens if not hundreds of soldiers) . Hopefully the spawning triggers get 'turned off' as you pass checkpoints though. Because it would be annoying to having a stream of germans pour in behind you. Come to think of it, i wonder if they turn off the spawning after you've 'taken' a building ? ie killed the germans and walked through the building.

I wasn't blown away or all that impressed by anything.
I'm really interested in WWII history and I like both realistic and not-so realistic games and others in between.
I suppose it's possible I'm finally tiring a bit of FPS games after playing every decent one since the original Wolfenstein.

The teammate stuff is great, good AI, they can take fairly good care of themselves, they follow you, hang back, duck into buildings or behind walls when under fire etc. The enemy AI also was good, you see them peering around corners, just sticking their gun around and firing off a few blind shots.
The changing environment stuff was done well. Graphics and sound were excellent, although the fog seemed very heavy, perhaps that was because I couldn't change that setting due to menu crashing problem I had.
That was the major problem I had, the menus crashing the game. I couldn't actually change any options in the game, I had to edit the config just to invert the mouse. Had a couple of in game crashes, seemed to be something to do with sound playback, not totally sure.
On the whole, well worth grabbing for those with fast connections. Modem people may want to wait until it is on the cover of the magazine or whatever. Think I'll be picking up the full game when it comes out.

I ran at 1280x1024, everything on max...
The game ran really smoothly. A few areas with texture problems, but not that bad. Nothing else to say...
The gameplay I liked: The weapons were quite reactive and produced the effect on your aim you would expect. This impressed me the most. I liked the 'team' style play also, it took me a few minutes to realize what was going on :) , but I adjusted quickly.
Things I didn't like: Explosions could be a little better, very lack-luster. The enemy seemed a little too predictable, I could easily figure out the areas they were hiding in and react accordingly (I know its a demo...). Also, after getting shot a few times, you should slow down, or fall down or something...I dunno, if they are going for realism, taking 5 or six bullets and still being able to move normally doesn't quite seem right.
All in all, I liked it. I will be buying this game.
