All these cool graphics cards and nothing requires them play on.

Kinda like buying a 300HP outboard motor when all you've got is an 8 foot canoe.

Aside from Doom 3, is there anything thats in the plans for 2002 that will require these 3megigillionpermillisecondpixel cards?

I think we have reached the point where content is becoming more important than tech. Pushing more polys and true dynamic lighting is cool but without content the game will not be awesome anymore.
Remember NOLF? That game was the game of the year last year and its tech was nothing ground
breaking but Monolith had access to talent and resources of FOX interactive. This make a
big difference.
I think this is why DNF is taking so long.

What's holding back 3D graphics is simply the advancement of the microprocessor. Developers can fashion lots cute little tricks with impressive sounding names but real progress is only seen when the megahertz and memory speeds go up. The Turing passable boobies are coming. Lets just be patient.
