Stomped Closing

by Steve Gibson, Dec 27, 2001 2:34pm PST

Sad news today, as we've lost another one. Stomped.com is closing up shop and calling it a day. The announcement was planned for a little later than now, but with the recent DB server crash it looks like Gary (the owner) decided to go ahead an announce it now. Here is an interview with the announcement.

We tried the PayPal route, but the results were disappointing to say the least. (While some were very supportive, it's was a small minority). As the revenue dried up we had to cut costs which meant letting more people go. With you, Aurora and Redwood being let go, our readership pretty much dried up. It has reached the point where it really isn't worth while keeping the site active. We still have equipment we have to maintain and rack fees for our co-host. I kept the site up probably longer than I should have from a business standpoint, but its reached its limit. [snip] We could focus on our LAN center, which brings in actual real money and has gotten a lot of attention from the business community, or we could struggle to keep our head above water trying to run a "news" website.
Stomped.com started around the same time we did here. It's one thing to see those flash in the pan websites come and go as they often do, but when a place like Stomped decides to call it quits, scary. Good luck to the Stomped guys and StompingGrounds LAN Center, which is making money. :)

  • I was a Stomped staff member between 1998-1999 and here were my thoughts:

    - When DarkMage and I started GameSeek.com (anyone remember that?), which was a part of the Stomped network I never really felt it was supported 100% by Stomped. Redwood was kind enough to put a search form on his site (when he still had his own site) but beyond that, GameSeek was on it's own. It was successful for about a year, then GameSpyder showed up.

    - Ever since Stomped was sold (to this Gary creep and others) it went WAY downhill. I left just as it was being sold... I've heard many stories after my departure. Essentially they got rid of the grassroots team (who dedicated themselves to Stomped since it's inception in 1996) and went about systematically flipping the ship upsidedown.

    - I always felt in general Stomped as an operation was very disorganized... no real leadership... it was only a matter of time.

    - JCal was one of the few truly talented members of Stomped. JCal has a future, definately. A great gaming-related journalist.

Just seems like the sell-out story of the month to me. I've been indifferent to Stomped since I left and am not surprised by it's demise.

  • I actually talked to Redwood at Quakecon this past August for a short while, and he had indicated to me then that he was thinking about looking leave Stomped. I just chalked it up as talk and didn't think anything of it. But then when he "left" Stomped about a month ago, you could really see the decline in news, and overall content on the site. I'm sure that readership suffered because of it. I'm sure they looked at the bottom line and saw that they still had The Stomping Grounds LAN center which was making money and decided to cut costs with the site.

It is sad to see them go. I can remember reading Redwood's Quake News back in the day. Hopefully he and other Stomped staff can go onto other places. JCal was able to leave Stomped and helped start www.homelanfed.com So who knows?
