Is it Florida, the capital of mindless entertainment, trying to censor a video game?

Or is it the video game industry, with its alleged rating system, trying to sell kids a game that allows them to go around kneecapping old ladies with a baseball bat and running over cops?

GTA3 or FFX?

this represents the general american mentality that has to go. Limit this, limit that, what about the children; in europe that are exposed to titties in the streets, titties in soap commercials, pr0n at night, violent movies with swears and blood on public tv, no drinking age, etc; whats the effect, a nation of drunk, oversexed, violent degenerates? hell no; in that society kids mature quicker than ours. In the US, kids are prevented from seeing/experienceing these things, so of course it sparks an obsession with pr0n, binge drinking, violence etc. I say that its better to be exposed to these things so that kids can mature and understand them quicker instead of looking at 'adult type' things as a mysterious realm of devious fun to be done behind people's backs. To hell with that, i like loser sexuality and open mindedness towards drinking, violent video games, whatever; life is about making your own choices, and the sooner our children realize that the better

The purpose of a majority of video games in my opinion is to be able to do stuff that you wouldnt be able to in reality. Ex: Fight against other people with rocket launchers, Race at 250 mph, Save the World, and in this case, commit crimes. Since the game is already rated M, it is largly assumed (and for good reason) that the people playing the game know the difference between reality and games. Purchasing the game should be no different than any other one, except for the fact you must be 17 to buy it. I see no reason to put it behind counters with porn.

Why don't they just start categorizing games the same way they do movies? For example, in Blockbusters, there is a "Kids" movie section that is not in the same area as the new releases.

Just break video game sections up into things like "All Ages", "13+", and "Mature".

the local babages cards kids who buy M rated games. Today I saw at least two kids who were bawling at the counter with game in hand cause they wouldent sell it to their 10 year old asses. Though, its probably better if mom or dad is there to actually see what johnny is buying rather then giving him 50 bucks and telling him to met back at the fountain in half an hour.

Seriously, GTA3 is not suited for kids.

But trying to stuff it away along with adult movies sounds strange, why not try to put some pressure on the store owners to make sure they don't sell it to kids?

If it's M and kids can't buy it, then what's the problem with putting it behind counters? Big freakin' deal.

Although this doesn't seem like the kind of thing that needs legislation. Let the stores handle it.

The problem with all this government-sponsored "child protection" is that it's so arbitrary. Does some magic switch get pulled on a kid's 18th birthday that suddenly makes him a responsible adult? Of course not. For any given youngster, the only people who have a shot at knowing what he should and shouldn't be exposed to is the people that see him every day -- his parents. No legislator can make that decision for every kid in the country -- but they all want to.

If Mr. and Mrs. Smith let their 12 year old kid play a violent video game, and don't talk to him about it, and he goes on a shooting spree, THEY ARE AT FAULT.

But in the lawyerocracy, rather than get punished for their negligence, they'll probably get a couple million from a video company, because that company didn't see fit to raise their kid for them.

i think my parents should consider themselves lucky i wasnt able to play games to this extent when i was young. and i doubt they would let me play it. but they let me play Wolf3d at 8 :)

I think all violent games should be banned because no sane person would ever play such a naughty thing.

While I dont think GTA3 should be placed in the same section as pr0n, I do think it should be in the R-rated movies section. Along with movies like Natural Born Killers and Trainspotting or something.

Problem is, when you go into your local retailer, you'll see games like GTA3 next to games like Klonoa 2 and Crash Bandicoot. That's a problem.

If I were a parent, I definitely would not want my young-teenage kid playing GTA3.

GOOD, then there will be a different section for R rated games, which will help legitify their existance, which means MORE GAMES LIKE GTA3!
