by Maarten Goldstein, Dec 26, 2001 7:01am PSTSo I hope everyone who celebrated had a nice Christmas and scored some mad loot. It's 2nd Christmas Day here today in the Netherlands, which is Boxing Day in some other countries. So now most of the family is over for dinner, though of course I managed to retreat to my computer. Still haven't seen LOTR after that delayed flight back on Saturday, though this Saturday I'm finally seeing it. Saw The Others on Monday though, which was also a great flick. Movie: Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand things with alloys and compositions and things with ... molecular structures.

I just got three compliments on my shackreviews of games.
Then as I was going through my reviews, I notice my StarCraft one had been removed (because it was pretty negative.) That is hilarious. Do I detect StarCraft players running this site? :p
Ah well, I guess we're not allowed to post negative reviews.

Oh, here is the text of my review since it was censored from the actual ShackReview page (although I saved it before you deleted it so haha):
StarCraft : WarCraft2 with a new palette and units yet it was able to capture the attention of thousands of people.
Perhaps it was the ease with which it could run on any crapbox of a computer.
Maybe it was the ease with which anyone with at least an average IQ could pick up on the gameplay and enjoy it.
I'm not really sure how, but for some reason this less-than-average game grew to a godlike status and garnered an enormous following.
It's a shame and yet it's a blessing.
A shame because better games like Total Annihilation were passed by because they required more time or patience, or because they were more of a system hog.
A blessing because the masses of fairly computer-illiterate people with "10GB of memory" and "600Mhz of RAM" were contained in the realm of this game and, for the most part, didn't seep out into the broader world of the really involved, better RTS games like Total Annihilation or Dark Reign (the competitors at the time).
I praise StarCraft for saving adult RTS fans like myself from having to deal with "KEKEKEKEKE TANK RUSH PWNED J00 ^_^" on a regular basis. Instead of masses of childish illiterates stomping around TA servers, they mostly stuck with StarCraft.
I dislike StarCraft because Blizzard had the time and the money to create a new, more involved RTS game after WarCraft II and instead chose to remarket a remake of WarCraft II - StarCraft.
I can justly review this game because while I have never owned it or even played it, I have witnessed many HOURS of gameplay on friends' computers. Sitting beside or behind a friend and watching them play several matches, singleplayer and multiplayer was more than enough to turn me off to StarCraft.
Seeing that the majority of the populace that played SC was a bunch of children (attitude-wise) was the icing on the cake for me.
And so I enjoyed the heck out of Total Annihilation. And today, when I'm at a LAN party and we're all in the mood for a little RTS action, what do we break out? TA.
SC isn't even an option among the majority of hardcore gamers. The mere mention of it leaves a bad taste in one's mouth.
I am realistic enough to not rate the game "Pretty Bad" though, because as a game, it is about Average. However, being for the most part a simple remake of WarCraft II, the overall concept is Less Than Average.
Reviewer Thinks The Game Is:
Less than Average
Other Games In The Genre That The Reviewer Liked:
Total Annihilation, Dark Reign, Command and Conquer, Dune 2, Red Alert, Red Alert 2, Moon Project
Other Games In The Genre That The Reviewer Didn't Like:
Dune 2000

First thing that hits me is that I hadn't thought about this beforehand, so I have no idea what I want. I usually try and line up some candidates first, maybe even write a list. But I was lost.
Then I realize I'm wearing my Mononoke shirt because I didn't realize I'd be leaving the house in the morning. I zip up my jacket and figure I'll give it a shot.
I walk around aimlessly...think of one book I might want...it's checked out. I go home empty handed.
Guess I'll be reading the books for English class :P
I bet he is cheating on us!

I'd like to install XP, but I don't have it :P
IE5 is crashing only like 30-60 minutes after use... and once IE crashes, my whole system starts becoming unstable. Sometimes it gets to the point where I can't even go to the control panel... W98 says it can't open any control-panel areas :P
Even Windows Media Player is unstable as hell... a lot of times it will just crash for no reason, and then I have to reboot yet again.
I want to uninstall and reinstall IE5, but W98 doesn't have an uninstall option for IE :P

That is all. Thanks.
I bought a new teac 24x burner and it came bundled with nero. Well the nero it was bundled with doesn't support that burner so I downloaded the upgrade and it supports the burner but it says that it cannot authorize because its not the burner it was bundled with. This is of course bullshit and I guess theres not much I can do about it I just wanted to vent =(
