The people have spoken, and picked the winners for the PC Game of the Year and new this year, Console Game of the Year. Some 4075 people took the time to vote, and here are the results: PC Game of the Year 2001
The winner (1351 votes): Max Payne. Ah how we all laughed at the seemingly slow development process, when it was finally released it was well worth it. With its bullet time gameplay, and its gritty urban setting, Remedy showed us that third person shooters on the PC could actually compete with first person shooters. Runner up (964 votes): Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Console Game of the Year 2001 The winner (1212 votes): Halo. Though a lot of people gave up on this title when Microsoft bought Bungie to make this an Xbox game, it took most people by surprise when it was finally released in November. Words like "best FPS game evar" were uttered, and even playing with a gamepad was no longer a problem. Runner up (1131 votes): Grand Theft Auto 3. Personal Picks Steve: PC Game - Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Though single player was good, but not great, the multiplayer side of things really make up for that and make you come back to play this game. Console Game - Grand Theft Auto 3. Maarten: PC Game - Undying. Though the game bombed in the eyes of its publisher EA, that's hardly a reflection of the quality of this game. Though the gameplay isn't super inventive and the game drags at certain points, the presentation of the game and the mood it creates especially during the first few levels stand out from a lot of other FPS games and make this a very, very enjoyable game. And it's damn cheap now too as Amazon and EB Games have it for a mere $14.99. Console Game - Grand Theft Auto 3. Really, what more can be said about this title? It's just one of the year's finest, compared to all games that came out this year, not just the ones on the Playstation 2.

  • It seems like a lot of you wonder why halo won. Perhaps its because you haven't played it yet. I've had tons of fun with the game, single player, and multiplayer with two tv's. A friend of mine that never liked first person shooters, and has big doubts about the xbox is considering getting it just for halo. That's how fun it is.

I was kind of surprised that ffx or metal gear didn't win first place, but it makes me wonder how many votes these other games recieved.

Maarten, how about a full list of all the games and how many votes they all recieved?

  • Halo for best console game....I would have to say it is close, but no winner over GT3 or even the just released Final Fantasy X. As for those who say Max Payne shouldn't be game of the year....even compared with those games that are far more complex, it still beats the crap out of them. Civ 3 (or whatever the hell the newest Sid game is) and their occult of empire building games have been done many times over, not to say they are bad, but across the board, they are not all that disimilar. Max, however, had a better storyline than Half Life or even Deus Ex, introduced the concept of bullet time even before the Matrix was first concepted as an anime rather than a movie, and implements a real style of gameplay that works for a thirdperson shooter. All these little factors alone propel to its rightful position. Thank god Duke Nukem Forever wasn't released this year, then I would definately be forced to disband this defense of MP in support of that!
