Game of the Year 2001 Results
by Maarten Goldstein, Dec 25, 2001 2:39am PSTThe people have spoken, and picked the winners for the PC Game of the Year and new this year, Console Game of the Year. Some 4075 people took the time to vote, and here are the results: PC Game of the Year 2001
The winner (1351 votes): Max Payne. Ah how we all laughed at the seemingly slow development process, when it was finally released it was well worth it. With its bullet time gameplay, and its gritty urban setting, Remedy showed us that third person shooters on the PC could actually compete with first person shooters. Runner up (964 votes): Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Console Game of the Year 2001 The winner (1212 votes): Halo. Though a lot of people gave up on this title when Microsoft bought Bungie to make this an Xbox game, it took most people by surprise when it was finally released in November. Words like "best FPS game evar" were uttered, and even playing with a gamepad was no longer a problem. Runner up (1131 votes): Grand Theft Auto 3. Personal Picks Steve: PC Game - Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Though single player was good, but not great, the multiplayer side of things really make up for that and make you come back to play this game. Console Game - Grand Theft Auto 3. Maarten: PC Game - Undying. Though the game bombed in the eyes of its publisher EA, that's hardly a reflection of the quality of this game. Though the gameplay isn't super inventive and the game drags at certain points, the presentation of the game and the mood it creates especially during the first few levels stand out from a lot of other FPS games and make this a very, very enjoyable game. And it's damn cheap now too as Amazon and EB Games have it for a mere $14.99. Console Game - Grand Theft Auto 3. Really, what more can be said about this title? It's just one of the year's finest, compared to all games that came out this year, not just the ones on the Playstation 2.

Red Hammer is more of the same goodness, I highly recommend it for anyone who liked OFP.

As far as I can work out, you move with one analogue stick and look with the other.
Is that all Halo does? If so it's hardly innovative as it's exactly what Red Faction and Project Eden (and probably others including Agent Under Fire from the reviews I've read) do and, while I think it's the best you can do on a gamepad, it still sucks my ass compared to a mouse and keyboard. You cannot aim accurately -- still need either enemies who don't move much or some kind of auto-aim -- and if an enemy gets beside you you're screwed because you can't turn fast enough.
Somebody please tell me that Halo has a really clever control system that hasn't been properly explained in any of the reviews I've read or I'll start to think that the whole world has gone insane and is so rushing to give praise to the game that they're saying it's fixed the problem of console FPS controls when it's done nothing new.
Thanks.

Even if general game sites give other games a higher score than Halo, this is an FPS-centric site. Sure it branches out a bit, but most of the visitors are grizzled veterans from the Quake1 years and sometimes even before that.
What the hell did you expect?

I was kind of surprised that ffx or metal gear didn't win first place, but it makes me wonder how many votes these other games recieved.
Maarten, how about a full list of all the games and how many votes they all recieved?

What a fantastic idea for a game: A mode which makes it SLOWER.
I would rather have a powerup which makes the player do more damage and all the enemies go super-fast than this horrible slow-down thing. I think that is better because first of all it is more exciting and second it's a double-edged sword where you're given more firepower but at the cost of everything being faster. Like getting Quad was a mixed blessing because you could easilly blow yourself up with a badly aimed rocket.
Slow is not exciting. I rarely used Bullet Time in MP because it felt so lame to me. When in use it made me feel even less connected to the the average gameplay.
(I avoided the pills in GTA3 which made you super-strong but everything slow as well because it pissed me off that it took five hours to walk anywhere after accidentally touching one of the annoying little things. I really hope that slow-motion is not adopted as a standard gameplay feature in all future games.)
But that's just me and maybe I'm wrong and it's a terrible tragedy.
Max Payne may be *PC* game of the year but I think that says more about the lack of good PC games in the last year. MP wasn't a complete turd or anything but I think it was rather average and, while the graphics were great, there was nothing new in the gameplay apart from Bullet Time, which did nothing for me. Style over content if you ask me. (The dream sequences were a really cool idea, though.) (Oh, and what the hell is with being unable to skip the cutscenes? HELLO?)
Sorry if it's your favourite game or whatever.

Best Simulation
Star Wars: Rogue Leader
heh I guess they didn't have another category to stick it in. Would you call RL a simulation? It seems more like Galaga 3D to me.

Ive only got into a few single missions and the start of the campaign and Ive already experienced a bunch of moments that I would have to rank as the best in my gaming experience, which goes back to wolf 3d.
Its more a sim the realism is incredible and the senarios play out differently.......If you have a reasonably grunty machine the graphics are brill......just make sure you get the game to patch 1.4 before playing.

the title 'game of the year' is a misnomer. of the games, for the pc, eligible for that distinction 9 out of 10 titles are first-person shooters (fps)! this is just too, too sad and a pointed commentary about the audience here. i would hope that any future contest of this sort would include at least two (2) titles from every genre (i.e., action, adventure, puzzle, strategy, role-playing, fighting, sports and simulation).

Arcanum - role-playing at its finest
Civ3 - as addictive as ever
Anachronox - great story, and one of the funniest games I've ever played
Blade of Darkness - interesting combat & level design, amazing graphics
Undying - hard to say why I liked it so much, combination atmosphere/level design/story
Operation Flashpoint - one word: freedom. How can you not like a game where you can steal one of the enemy's own tanks to run them over and/or blow up the rest of their tanks?
BG2: Throne of Bhaal - just for concluding the love story from BG2 (*sniff* Viconia *sniff*)
Oni - the combat is just plain fun, if you can ignore the so-so graphics/level design
