/me does not see the Symphony of the Night game for Sega Saturn listed :(

My main gripe is that people are rating games by how they remember them instead of how they are in today's world.

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the point of the reviews is to rate the games how they would rate if someone were looking to buy them today (after all, what other use would rating old school games have? None.)

So when I reviewed HalfLife, for example, I rated it "Good".
Perhaps if this was 1997 (or whatever year it was released), I would have rated it "Exceptional".

But in today's game market, it is Good. That is still saying a lot for a game that old to be Good.

So think before you rate: If you want to reminisc about your gameplay experiences with the game, DO SO! Talk about all your fond memories. But don't go rating it Excellent when by today's standards, it isn't.

(And even I must admit there are a handful of games that are several years old that you CAN install today and still consider them Exceptional. I would consider Quake to be one of those. And perhaps Duke3D as well.)

This is why I feel the overall ratings the older games receieve should be completely ignored.

Read the reader reviews instead. There you will find reasons to back the ratings, and hopefully if someone is taking the time to write a review, they are also mature enough to rate it appropriately as well. IOW, less "OMG TIHS GAEM WAS TEH BOMB WEHN IT CAME OUT IN 1998 SO I IS RATIN IT EKSEPTIONUL BECAWSE IT WAS SO GOOD BACK THEN" and more < realistic rating and reasons for it >.

Sam & Max, oh yeah, good stuff. But now that this is in here you have to drop Grim Fandango in the list. Its one of the only games I can think of that I didn't want to end.

The only bad part about shackreviews is how many people rate games that they havent played. Example: Many games (ie blood wake for xbox) arent out yet, yet have 25+ ratings. I know there isnt much anyone can do (they can make fake ratings no matter what). But I'd hate to see this turn into like ebgame's review system.
