Phantasy Star Online Demo
by Maarten Goldstein, Dec 18, 2001 9:07am PSTComputer and Video Games has a 13mb (not exactly huge) demo for Sega's multiplayer RPG Phantasy Star Online. Originally released on the Dreamcast, this game is now making its way to the PC though no date has been set yet for the full version. What is Phantasy Star Online all about?
Phantasy Star Online lets players gang up to adventure through the sci-fi world of Ragol smacking dragons, powering up floating briefcases, chatting to each other and generally being very cool indeed. PC RPG fanatics be warned – its role-playing, Jim, but not as you know it.More about the game can be found on Sega.com (Dreamcast info page though)

First off, they use Windows Installer which is always kind of shiesty *and* it wants you to reboot afterwards. WTF, you need to reboot after installing a game?
So I get it installed and run the game. I always go into the options first, so I kind of have an idea of what I'll be dealing with. Huh, odd, my sound options are greyed out along with network and there is no control settings. Oh but I can change language, oh joy! So right, it lacks network play so I can't test what it's really meant to be.
Get into the game and fumble till I figure out the weird controls. QWERTY is for messages, while arrows replicated the Dreamcast's ABXY buttons. The numerical pad is used for the weird Tomb Raider-esque controls.
I drops you right into a woodland area where it looks like monsters roam. So, I start killing things and... I can't be hurt. Ooookay. So I kill. And move to the next area. And kill. Next area. Oh yeah, I'm not getting hurt, I'm not getting XP, and the item crates are all empty. Oh, and the monsters aren't dropping anything. Boring. ESCape. It tells me it'll save things, but then when I get to the main menu, the Continue option is still grey so I'll hazard a guess it didn't save. I go to quit and... Blackscreen. Locked.
Yeah, what a poor demo. Doesn't really hype me for what is essentially Anime Diablo 3D.
Oh yeah, graphics were nice except for the horrible horrible rendering errors on my Radeon, dropping random while polygons all over the place.

the password on the .rar is hoorj because it was downloaded from wunderbred.
I allowed 15 people at one time, so get in and get it and get out. I'm on @home so the speeds might not be great, but the sound to be better then anything else available besides wunder's link. enjoy.
