MoH, RTCW, Quake3 - Widescreen
by Steve Gibson, Dec 15, 2001 9:55am PSTI finally got around to sharing this little trick with a friend the other night and thought a lot of you guys might enjoy it. All Quake3 engine based games have the ability to play in widescreen letterbox mode. I'm not talking about adjusting your FOV, but actual non-distorted widescreen mode [screenshots here!]. 856x480. The only trick is getting your videocard to recognize the resolution correctly. That takes a bit of .INF or registry magic.
- Extract your NVidia drivers with WinZip to a directory - Open the NV4_DISP.INF file in notepad - Scroll down until you see the listings of resolutions and refresh rates, example: HKR,, NV4_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "8 800 600 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0"
- Find the listing that points to the card you have, then make a copy of the 800x600 resolution line directly below it and change that to say 856x480. Here's an example for TNT (NV4) owners, note that the NV4_Modes section will differ to say NV10, NV15, etc. BEFORE: HKR,, NV4_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "8 800 600 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0" AFTER: HKR,, NV4_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "8 800 600 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0" HKR,, NV4_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "8 856 480 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0"After you edit the .INF file, install the drivers. To simplify things for people who dont care how its done, I have modified the WinXP 23.11 NVidia drivers .INF file to work with all NVidia cards, Just grab this and save it in to your extracted drivers directory, overwriting the .INF file that comes with the package from NVidia. Install those drivers and you'll be good to go. DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THESE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I've been doing this for quite a while so I dont think there is any real risk involved, but dont come crying to me if your machine blows up and your wife leaves you. Now, in any Quake3 engine game, RTCW, MoH, Quake3 (heh) just launch the game with +set r_mode 11 or type r_mode 11 then vid_restart at the console. You may wish to play with r_displayrefresh and also adjust your monitor to have black bars at the top and bottom so things arent distorted. This is letterbox, so unless you've got a widescreen monitor you're gonna give up a little screen space just like watching widescreen movies on a regular TV. Lastly, if you're a megahax0r you may wish to play with r_customheight and r_customwidth and do your own fruity resolutions that you feel like plugging in. I havent messed with that much but I assume it can be done.

Why would you want to chop the top and bottom off of your monitor?
Do you want it to be more difficult to see who is above and below you?
I have mine at 2048x1536 on a Sony Trinitron 21".
While you lot are trying to play through a letter box with one eye closed, I can shoot the asshole out of a flee's behind with a rocket launcher.

All you get from this hack is a stretched screen. Unless I'm missing something drastic.

Do I run the commands before the engine starts or after it gets to the menu screen in the games.
I have run the engine in widescreen before but not in the letterbox edition with the black bars at the top and bottom.
It seems as if it is compressing the output into 800x600 but doesn't have the bars at the top or bottom.
Any advice?

player. At the Tittle screen bring down the console and type cg_fov 100, or 110. Of course FOV is cheat
protected so you can't do it in multiplayer mode, at least i don't think you can. If you start your single
player game going first and then try to do cg_fov it will say it's cheat protected but if you do it at
the title screen without a game going it will work. Looks pretty cool, at 100 - 110 fov but things get a
little destorted.

My favorite resolution pre-win2k was 960x720.. yet XP/2k lost the ability to use this in fullscreen mode.
I'm gonna try to haxx0r that one in, so i can go back to using the resolution of gods..
HKR,, NV4_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "32 856 480 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0"
HKR,, NV4_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "32 960 720 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0"
HKR,, NV4_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "32 1024 768 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0"
should work, right?!

On that note, since people are starting to get these huge projection-style TV's in their homes (I just got one a couple weeks ago), has anyone had any luck with connecting a computer VGA (HDDB-15 pin) to one of these things yet? I'm trying to avoid using the crappy s-video, and looking for whats needed -- maybe even with pictures for us 'slower' people... :)
