Medal of Honor, The Day After

by Maarten Goldstein, Dec 14, 2001 5:13am PST

So now that the Medal of Honor demo is out, what do you think? Please, just impressions and not any posts about where to download or "GAMESPY IS TEH DEVIL". They might well be, but that's not the point of the post. Good, bad, what should be improved?

  • The demo was good. There were a few things I didnt like, but I had some fun with it.

I did want to say though that the guys that put this together are some of the better people I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Vince just straight out kicks ass. He's an extremely talented and knowledgeable individual, and sacrifices so much and works his ass off.

The rest of the guys, Todd, Brad, Justin, Chance "Monkeyboy" (btw I still have your copy of Deus Ex, I'll send it to you, Steve, Paul "Talon Jury, Michale Boon, Carl, Ken "Cookieman" Turner, Mike Milliger, Nate "Natesta" Silvers, Adam, Jeff, Earl, Matt (when is she do again?), Grant "gayshirt" Collier, and whoever else I couldnt remember at this time...

You guys were the best team I have ever had the pleasure of working with. You guys wentt through alot of crap to finally get this done and solid. The sacrifices and comprises you guys made....and going out of your way to make me feel welcome, you guys are great.

I never felt as welcomed anywhere before, as I did in Tulsa. These guys too time out of their day to unload my 20ft long U-Haul (that I drove from Seattle to Tulsa) and helped haul our crap into a 2 story townhouse on the second floor in 110 degree weather.

Not only this, but when we found out that our 2nd floor bathroom floor was falling apart into our 1st floor bathroom...they all helped move our crap out of our place into the place right next door...another 2 floor townhouse on the second floor...in 110 degree weather.

Some of these guys I came to be pretty tight with. Some I didnt, but I had a mutual respect for you all. To put up with everything that was going on and retain the passion for this game and getting it done...I applaud you.

Things didnt work out there as much as I had hoped, but I know this was no fault of my own. I always appreciated the help you gave me, helping us out when it came to leaving (I'll be sending a check soon Jon and Brad) and just being there as friends.

    cheers..drink one for me....

p.s. Todd do me a favor, and get a pic of some of those damn hotties at the Ritz... ;)

  • There seem to be a lot of people complaining about the weapon balance in this game, which confuses me. I just spent a good three hours in deathmatch, in different maps, using all of the different weapons. I found that they're all perfectly balanced. One thing to realize, is how heavily this game relies on locational damage. Head shots will take you far, leg shots suck and torso shots are so-so. But I managed to do well with all the weapons. Even the pistols, which, for once, are actually useful. The luger rocks!

As far as graphics go, I have no complaints. It's not the prettiest game in the world, but it's not ugly either. Besides, I was so taken by the gameplay, that it really didn't matter any way.

Gameplay - all I have to complain about are the player speeds. The running is way too sluggish... and the walking is just ludicrous. Especially since (as someone mentioned earlier) that the weapons are designed for faster gameplay. However, the slow speeds may contribute somewhat to the overall balance of the game. It's a change, and I'm not sure if I like it, but I got used to it after awhile.

Lack of blood - so what? If you play the game, you really end up not noticing. I think the overall effectiveness of the weapons (they have great 'oomph') more than makes up for it. But I still think they should give the player the freedom to choose whether or not they want gore.

Overall a very fun game. Well balanced. Interesting level design. Amazing weapons. Great sounds. All that.

Except for one major thing... GAMESPY IS THE DEVIL. Sorry, I just really had to close with that. Bunch of dorks.

  • My impressions....

GAMEPLAY: well, the free for all is pretty boring, because well.. it's free for all, but i can see the single player and team based multiplayer being lots of fun because of the following positive aspects of this game.

WEAPONS: same stuff as in dod. and that = good thing. the weapons are in my opinion much better than those in Wolfenstein. they're actually weapons that were used in world war 2 unlike wolf's weapons, most of which are made up. (i of course understand that RTCW is a different type of game, more of an action title than moh:aa.) medal of honor: allied assault is pretty much a WWII sim, so it seems to pull that off nicely in most areas. one problem i had with the weapons was that the rocketlauncher is much too easy to use, it seems they tried to take steps to make it less like a q3a type rocketlauncher, but they kind of failed, it's super unrealistic. and the mp40 looks a little odd.. but it's no big deal. other than those two things, the weapons seem to be really, really top notch.

SOUND: sound is amazing, lots of stuff straight from saving private ryan it seems. everything seems very slick and well used. no problems here at all that i could see.

GRAPHICS: quite nice. i'd say they are pretty much on the same level as RTCW. maybe slightly less detailed textures, but not much difference really. they're enough to keep things pretty without making it seem too flashy and arcade like. (sort of the feeling i got from RTCW)

BOTTOM LINE: seems to have a lot of potential that isn't being taken advantage of in this demo. it is after all just free for all, not very indicative of the rest of the game (singleplayer, team based multiplayer) so i'll hold off any more judgements on the game until i play something besides this rather boring free for all.
