Pay It Again Sam
by Steve Gibson, Dec 04, 2001 9:15am PSTOh that headline! I kill me! Here's one I have a hard time imagining being much of a success. Real Networks has just launched a pay service where you can download music and videos from the web. Apparently they arent alone in the venture as Listen.com has launched a similar service yesterday.
"I think it's the only way that music service providers can bridge the gap for consumers between their existing experience and services they'll pay for in future," said Aram Sinnreich, an analyst with Jupiter Media Metrix. "There is no way to get consumers interested in paid music unless it's smoothly integrated with music that consumers have access to in other channels."Seems a little fruity, but then again RealNetworks has a RealOne service with over 400,000 subscribers paying $9.95 a month, so they must be doing something right.

Seriously... how many of you would actually PAY money for ANYTHING made by Real?! You know, the people who brought you the wonderful spy/bloat ware products for media streaming of incredibly LOW quality audio and visual data?
I'd rather get a blowjob from Hillary Rosen.
Since all your music goes kaput if you can your service - what happens when you have a few gigs and they jack the price up on you?

- I have to be able to take my music and transfer it to a CD.
- I have to be able to keep local copies of the music on my hard drive
- I have to be able to convert to other formats.
- The service must be run on fast servers with excellent audio quality.
- I am not paying for a service if I have to download the music of other users.
I don't think these are profit killing requests.
