First Console Virus!
by Jack Mathews, Nov 29, 2001 3:49pm PSTOk, maybe the headline was a tad misleading. It turns out that a Japanese Dreamcast game in Japan has been released with a PC virus. Apparently the game's CD comes with PC screen saver infected with W32.Kriz. The title is being pulled from shelves there. (Thanks Raf) While this doesn't affect anyone outside of Japan, the virus thought does bring up something interesting. Namely that as people are hacking the X Box left and right, there's likely to be an X Box warez scene. It'll likely be very soon before people start to write loaders for the warezed games, as well as mini-games of their own. So what do you guys think of X Box viruses/trojans? Does it break the X Box warranty to run downloaded content on it?

I'm really tired of all the talk of Xbox warez, hacking, teaking, possibly OCing, all because everyone thinks "Xbox == PC"

Chances are, the Xbox warez scene won't be that great, especially if Microsoft starts making games that use more capacity than a CDROM (which they probably do). Like PS2 games and stuff are a pain, because most of them require a DVD burner and mod chip to work properly. if microsoft makes their games greater than CD sized, then the scene will grow slowly because of the current price/lack of DVD burners.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Wait till all the hax0rs out there are done having thier way with it since it is so similar to a PC.
Enjoy the viruses, patches, and "service packs".
Of course, you stay away from the underground scene this is minimized but come on, the hardcore geeks, they are going to do it.

a console should be just a console. remove the hdd ms. just make a tinsized] storage medium with a FS nobody can read.
if you want to upgrade/patch/download/save. get a pc.
on the other hand (and a small hand it is) multi-link up! (net or local) will be good. (as long as it doesnt revert to pc stuff -mmporgs etc-)

Getting a little ahead of ourselves? Xbox trojans? Viruses? I'd like to get ahold of your psychic...
And viruses must be a pretty big concern for you, huh? Considering they don't exist for the Xbox, and in the event they do, chances are you'll need to use an illegal piece of software to GET the virus... yeah, it must be a real problem for you indeed.
What hole is this stuff pulled out of... you take the fun hackability the PC and Xbox share, and turn it into some damned VIRUS hunt. GOOD ONE!
For $500 I could beast out my current PC with new videocard, proc, mobo, and ram, and buy a few games. I don't even want to do THAT, so I surely don't need a console for that much money.
Maybe once I'm out of college and have a job (next spring). :-\
And then watchin gpeople blame Microsoft or other publishers because of it. The way that system is designed, there seems to be way too many ways to fuck it up, and by default cause all sorts of problems.
And the idea of XBox viruses going over its El Cool Magnifico Broadband setup amuses the hell out of me. :)
