Human Embryo Clone
by Steve Gibson, Nov 25, 2001 8:01am PSTHere it is, the first publically announced successful clone made of a human embryo. I would think this has probably happened in private a little while back (and will continue to) but some scientists have gone public with their work. Here ya go:
Scientists have successfully cloned a human embryo for the first time, and the doctor whose company led the effort said Sunday on NBCs Meet the Press that the breakthrough holds the promise of allowing the creation of virtually unlimited organs for transplantation. But two lawmakers said Congress will ultimately outlaw the cloning of human embryos because of moral and ethical questions about the practice and to prevent human cloning.I still cant decide what I think about this stuff. It's like we already have people doing artificial insemination and apparently that's ok in the eyes of the law. I just imagine a couple heartbroken over them about to lose a child, and then knowing the technology is available to help that child, but have it denied by the government for "moral and ethical" reasons. My vote: I vote for I have no idea and dont feel like I'm even close to informed enough to make any type of judgement.

The opposition against cloning will probably die when the first successfull cloned-liver (or whatever) transplant will have taken place. Then about 95% of those that are now hard against this 'evil freak of nature' will do a complete 180 and just looove this breakthrough. The problem will still remain, how to controll this 'evil freak of nature' (by then, 'miracle of science'). We don't want herds of parentless humans to roam the wild.
And another thing. When parents will be abel to pick-and-choose the qualities of their children (one ova = many children, with cloning) and 'unsuccessfull' ofspring can be disgarded with a flick of the finger, then what about those that can't afford it (hello third world). We've all seen the movies, TV-shows and SciFi books on this subject, but this is not some Hollywood-problem (like some killer-tomatoes...?).

Does anyone actually KNOW what a stem cell is, and how they're planned to be created and used? Or is everyone too busy having fantasies about growing a "organ farm" body over a ten year period for someone who needs an organ transplant in the next two weeks?
Who would win in a fight?!?! Human clones or AI?!?!

This is HUMAN FARMING and is disgusting.
There is no way that industry can be trusted to use this kind of technology in an ethical way. I say outlaw it.

If you're poo', well fuck you, you die without a clone and that's the end of you.
An interesting twist is that as pointed out, even a clone is an individual. You can't live on forever. Longer, yes, but absolutely not forever until they are able to copy brains.

Science will move forward. Oppose it, support it, whatever; human scientific exploration and understanding will continue.
Fear of such things is based on ignorance or a desire to maintain the status quo, for it is 'uncomfortable' to delve into these areas.

This first 'human clone' was not made from a egg that was fertilized with a sperm. This clone was made from an egg cell which was put under a certain process that caused it to double its dna and become a zygote.
Words to live by. Seriously what do they hope to accomplish by making cloning illegal. Sure it might slow it down some, but the science cann't be stopped. All they would do is perpetuate an underground slave trade type deal. "War on Drugs" type shit. I'm entirely disgusted with the way our gov has been run in recent years. Catering to the majorities uneducated whims is not healthy for a nation.

Though I do have one thought: I think society is advancing in many ways, science and technology-wise, that human beings can hardly keep up with on a mental / psychological / emotional / moral level.

it limits human variation.
say a new desease affects certain types of people. and we transplant organs into 10000's of people. this organ type makes them suseptible to this new desease. all these people will die because we use the same organ 10000's of times over.

Seriously, I'm more than a little peeved that embryo cloning should be outright outlawed. The government (which is supposed to be seperated from church) has allready made the decision for us. What exactly is going to be outlawed here? I'm not saying that we should start setting up cloned pregnancy clinics or anything, but it seems like everythingi n it's power is going to be done from getting the word human and cloning used in the same sentence in the United States. I think that even means cloning organs.
Why don't we set aside our moral delimas for awhile and see where this goes? If it becomes to volatile, THEN let's shitcan it. It seems to me that medical since isn't populated by a bunch of Dr. Frankensteins, out to fill their sick little infatuations with wild expirements making 5-assed monkeys. They want to HELP people. They get PAID to help people.
Technically, aren't identical twins, clones? They are the products of an embryo that split and formed two seperate, yet identical embryos, which is, in a way, a perfect clone. What exactly constitutes a clone? I think we should hear medical people giving cons rather than morally confused people.

the argument should be: parents can't have kids, adoption process takes too long -> get a clone!
not "ohh, my daughter died of SIDS at 4 weeks, and I want to have her back.." .. not HER, you want a CHILD. Maybe it's just semantics, but I'm really bothered by it.

I don't understand how the government can even begin to think about banning cloning when the technology is still in its infancy. An entire field of science made completely illegal?? I don't think these idiot Senators understand the amazing potential of cloning research... they're so worried about humans being cloned... they can't see the potential it has to aid in the understanding the human g-nome, or the development of genetic cures, or stem-cell therapy... the list is endless!
It just really pisses me off that the government is going to outlaw something that has such tremendous potential to help the human race.

All I ask is this: PLEASE don't implement RPG elements. Deus Ex was too cumbersome for me to attempt playing.
