I need to implement a sorted dictionary in c++. Can anyone recommend a good method of storing the data? I mean like, a class or STL template that will sort itself automatically when I insert new objects into it. It's okay if I do the sorting myself, but it would be cleaner if there was an STL template that sorts itself.

When I modify the dictionary file, there are a few ways I can do it:
a) copy the whole thing to memory, edit it, write it back to disk.
b) only append to the file, and keep a separate file that contains the alphabetical word order. The problem with this approach is that I don't know how I could insert a word between position 3 and 4, if I was using integers.

any recommendations?

Also, can hashing do partial matching? Like, if I wanted to do word stemming. The user enters "foo", and I would give them "food", "fool", "foobar" and whatever else starts with "foo". I've never heard of anything like this, but some of you might know of a way to do it.
