Got some really great feedback on the whole reviewing reviews thread yesterday. One of the most interesting threads we've had in a while. Lots to ponder and consider but I think the overwhelming feeling I got was we should make reviews include either reviews or votes from readers, and to keep the reviews brief and simple. Possibly as simple as "buy / no buy". Also instead of picking apart the gameplay in to categories to rate, just describe the gameplay in the review and there is no need to categorize it with separate scores. Lastly, this one is important, more focus on what type of games similar to the one in the review the author has enjoyed in the past should be included. I think that one is key. Had an advertiser that I was reserving 25% of the ad space for here for the holiday season back out recently (doh!). Taking a page outa Lowtax's book I'm pretty sure it's a good timing for a little experiment. More on that later today. RTCW Today! Maybe I should review it or something!? Movie: We seem to be made to suffer. It's our lot in life. Oh, a 'misunderstanding' between the forumserver and the shackserver has been resolved, and the forum is nice and fast again.

  • Steve,

Sounds like you are looking to be the rotten tomatoes (www.rotten-tomatoes.com) of game review sites. They don't actually do the reviews themselves. Instead they keep track of all the reviews made on the net, consider whether the review was good or bad, then give a percentage of how many of the reviewers thought it was good or bad. A good movie is something like 65% of the reviews being favorable. They highlight the outstanding reviews and give a brief synopsis of what the majority of the reviewers thought. Sounds like a great idea for a game site.

So instead of you yourself reviewing games - the total from whether the game should recieve a buy or no buy is based on the percentage of yay or nay reviews. You could probably also have users of this site vote on whether the game and post a small review the way gamespot does.

So in the end you would have 2 numbers. One representing the impressions of the press reviewers and one representing the actual reviews. Overall it should give a way better impression of the game than any single review could.
