SoF2 To Have Multiplayer
by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 19, 2001 9:57am PSTIn a move which will certainly be appreciated by online gamers, Activision and Raven have announced that Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix will include multiplayer support. For a long time it was unsure if SoF2 would have any multiplayer modes. It will ship with Free For All and Team Deathmatch multiplayer modes.
Multiplayer mode in Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix features over 100 unique model/skin combinations so players can pick the perfect avatar, and with 12 - 14 in-view weapons the action is guaranteed to be fast and furious. Additionally, Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix's multiplayer code is designed to be easily modified by the mod community. [...]Soldier of Fortune 2 should ship sometime early next year.

A month or two after release this will have 30 people playing online, just like SOF did, and just like Elite Force did.
Hopefully the singleplay game doesn't suffer.

What about this game's multiplayer will be unique and different than SoF 1? What about this game's multiplayer will be unique and different than Unreal, than Quake2, than Elite Force?
My point is, the current trend has been such that developers made a decision early on in a game's development that the game would either be single or multiplayer. Look at Deus Ex (ignoring the appearently hastily thrown together add-on), look at Max Payne.
True, these games had little replay value on their own, but do you honestly think that running around through random corridors in the respective game's settings firing off the respective games weapons would really hold the attraction the development time to implement warrented?
FFA and Team Deathmatch has been done, and it's been done very well a couple of times. If you're going to add a multiplayer component, make it unique and different. I was very disappointed with Elite Force's multiplayer. How sad was it that they decided that, "Well, we need multiplayer or everyone will bitch. Hm, probably the easiest route would be to basically make Quake3 with Star Trek weapons." They were calling it Holomatch. I was hoping for a game (or at least an attempt at a simulation) of something the crew would do on the holodeck. Perhaps a tactical combat trainer or an objective based mission simulator. Not Quake3 with Star Trek weapons.
In short, the days of tacking on multiplayer should be over. Yes, I want a multiplayer component, but I'd rather nothing at all than FFA and Team DM. Spend you time and effort improving the single player game or make something truly unique if it'll support multiplayer.

This game is IDEAL for some sort of tactical realistic team-based multiplayer. I wish more publishers would follow wolfenstein's lead and innovate in multiplayer just like they do in singleplayer. It sounds to me like they are putting it in just to put it in.
They get bonus points over, say, Max Payne, however.

Where is the fun in playing the same deathmatch modes over and over again.
I agree with whoever (look for the comment) said that teams (like the Wolf team) need to invent better deathmatch modes than gran a gun and go nuts, or team gun grabbing and going nuts.
