  • I picked up an X box early Thursday morning, and haven't stopped playing it since. I got Halo, Madden 2002, DOA3, and Cel Damage. The experiences I've had in Halo are unmatched. I would compare it to half life, but it deserves more than that. Halo is what future games will have to compete against, it's the new Half Life. If you are even remotely interested in Halo, you need to buy an Xbox. It's worth the 299 alone JUST to play Halo. I had 4 friends over last night and we took turns playing co-op, there were screams and "OH MY GOD"'s all night long.

DOA 3 is godly. The graphics on the levels are amazing. I have to remind myself that it's not a cut-scene or CGI movie. It's gorgeous. The counter moves are extremely fun to play with too.

Madden 2002 is great. I had'nt played the PS2 version of it, so I was blown away when I saw it on Xbox. I heard they didn't change much, but I had a great time playing it none the less. I created my own player and the announcer PRONOUNCED MY NAME PERFECTLY. It was freaky to hear my name in the game.

Cel Damage is a good party game. The single player is AWFUL. The computer "AI" beats the shit out of you 9/10 times, and the rewards for winning are just more small levels and more weapons. The weapons, however, are SWEET. Punching gloves, axes, cannons, you name it. It's really fast paced, though. Which is hard to get used to. GET HALO, DOA3 and MADDEN before you even consider getting Cel Damage.

Xbox was worth every dollar. Go get one, now..

    now damnit!

  • my first xbox encounter happened this weekend. my thoughts:
first off my friend went through 5 (yes 5) xbox's that didnt work. he made 5 trips back and forth to the mall each time getting a faulty one. finally on the last time the store owner opened and tested it before he left with it, the first 2 they tested didnt work, finally the last one they had worked and he left with it. the error message it gave to all the xbox's was that it needed serviced.
    the games:
halo absolutely amazing, co-op was so much fun, im addicted
doa3 graphics are superb, not a big doa fan but i can appreciate its obvious greatness
tony hawk 2x: love the 60fps especially in multiplayer mode, the new stages i played on were decent too
i strongly believe xbox will come out on top over ps2 and gamecube in the longrun. ps2 wins this xmas season though.

  • Well, i'd been deliberating b/w a PS2 and an XBox. After playing Halo at Target the other day I decided to get the XBox. I called around last night (Best Buy, Toys-R-Us, Walmart and EB). EB was the only one to have exactly one left. I sped over there since they said they couldn't reserve it. Got there and picked it up along with Halo (of course), DOA3 and Amped.

XBox - yes, the console ifself is rather big and ugly. it also pisses me off that you have to buy an additional component to playback DVDs. but in the XBox's case what's inside is what matters. despite all the flack i'd heard about the controller i've found it to be comfortable.

Halo - what else can i say about this amazing game. beautiful graphics, good AI. the enemies are take cover, try to flank (the little ones are funny as hell). playing an FPS with a controller took me a little while to get used to (found it easier using inverted mode). the warthog (jeep) is a pain to learn to drive. cooperative mode is neat but definitely looking forward to MP for the PC.

DOA3 - i'm not really all that into fighting games and haven't played that many so can't compare/contrast with other titles. however what i can say is DOA3 is beautiful, beautiful and beautiful.

Amped - i picked this one cause they were out of Project Gotham and NFL Fever 2002. It looks nice, not at the same level graphically as Halo or DOA3. Lots and tricks and stuff. However, its not my type of game. i'm taking this one back today to trade for something else. I'm not really sure what though, probably Oddworld.

  • I must say that my first impression of the xbox was disappointment. I saw DOA3, and since I'd already played the PS2 version, the graphics looked a little better but the gameplay seemed the same. But I haven't played both games in serious depth, so I'm not the best judge on the matter. All I know is that I've played many, many fighting games since Mortal Kombat, and Soul Caliber is a toughie to beat. I'm also kind of sick of fighting games...

This was at my friend's apartment, who'd gotten an xbox as an early christmas present from his mommy (heh). She only let him pick one game though, and it was DOA3. Over Halo, I don't know how he could have done that... Well, he was gone all day yesterday for his D&D thing, so me and his roommate went to Blockbuster and rented Halo.

    Oh. My. God.

This has to be the best game I've ever played.

First off, I've looked forward to this game for the PC for a very, very long time. But after seeing what it does on the xbox... well, to put it this way, I never had any intention of getting one of the new consoles. But now, I'm definitely getting an xbox. After seeing what Halo can do with the xbox's hardware, I can't wait to see what games will be out on it a year from now.

It's been three years since I've been impressed this much by a game. And that was Half-Life, which, was three years ago to this month. Many people are saying Halo is much better than Half-Life - well, that may be, but Half-Life is also three years old. When it came out, it is and was the best shooter for singleplayer play. After I'm maybe 3/4ths the way through or after I've beaten Halo (when I buy one next month) I'll be able to say whether or not it beat Half-Life in terms of story.

In terms of gameplay? Well... the AI certainly impressed me. The enemies are as smart as people (but not as smart as smart people...). And continued to frustrate me when I was the last man down, one sliver of health left, fully relying on my shield, waiting for the dropship in the bushes, sneaking around and scouting their base (this is on the second level) while their reinforcements continued to pour in.
The jeep is a fun drive. Once I finally got a hang of it's controls, I had a blast weaving it through trees and rocks, setting my passengers up in a good firing position while I spun and wove through Covenant troops. And honestly, the controls were a pain to get used to (no mouse and keyboard after all) but I found that I liked the setup. I also noticed that the game auto-tracks your target when you're shooting, but not too heavily - just enough to keep your aim steady. I've never been a fan of auto-aim, but when you're playing with a controller it is a bit nice.

Graphics are top-notch, obviously. The sound is amazing... I'll need to get a new sound system for this, perhaps an older FPS2000. Something with dolby.
What blew me away was the third (or fourth?) night mission. Seeing how realistic the lamps were on my 'mates guns... wow. As they ran through rocks and trees and seeing gun-fire in the darkness, I honestly felt like I was in a movie. They would cover me when I would sit and pick targets with my sniper rifle, or sometimes they'd run ahead, or fall back, depending on the situation, though I'm not sure whether that was relative to what I was doing or not. I look forward to buying this game. Thank God I work for Target... that discount will help a sod like me.

Honestly I wanted a Gamecube. But after what I've seen, I've given up on Nintendo. I'll rent one for Metroid, and that's it.

Bottom line is that Halo so impressed me I'm getting an X-Box. I'm looking forward to some other games, of course, like that Starfighter game from Lucasarts. And many others... but the X-Box is a powerful platform that I hope many developers take advantage of.
