YOUR Launch Impressions
by Jack Mathews, Nov 17, 2001 3:19pm PSTHey guys, I just wanted to start a news items/thread on the console launches, as the X Box launched Thursday and the GameCube launches tomorrow, it's a big weekend for a lot of people! We got a couple X Boxes here at work, and I got a GameCube and some of the games yesterday. Since I hate reading when game developers slag other peoples' games, I'm going to post my positive impressions of each. It'd be cool if people could share their experiences with the new consoles in the comments, almost a Shack Readers buyer's guide. Let's keep this one focused to what you guys think of the titles, not so much an "xbox sucks gc rulez" thread - I'll be trying to keep it well moderated. Anyway, here's mine so far:
X Box - Halo - Surprisingly very fun, especially the indoor combat. The enemies are extremely fun to fight against, the health system is great, infinite respawns at checkpoints are nice. The controls (once I could invert the lookaround) are pretty damn nice. - Munch's Oddysee - While I personally didn't play it much, after the first 10 or 20 minutes this seems to become a really enjoyable platformer. - DOA3 - While I'm admittadly a button-masher at fighting games, this game impressed the shit out of me. It's gorgeous, and is pretty fun, but that's fun to someone that can barely play Street Fighter for what it's worth. GameCube - Super Monkey Ball!!!!!!!! I love this game! It's a great party game, and the reason I bought four GC controllers. - Rogue Leader - Runs smooth, looks gorgeous, need to play more.I've also heard great stuff about Fusion Frenzy for the X Box though I haven't played it yet. Hopefully I'll get to play it tonight or tomorrow. Also I'll of course be heading to Fry's and Best Buy for more GC launch titles tomorrow. Anyway, you guys discuss.

Halo: I played a marathon session of co-op with my brother last night and let me tell you, it was the most fun I have ever had playing a game. I have been playing video/cpu games since the old Apple II/Atari 2600 days and Halo gets my vote for the best game I have ever played. Remember the feeling you had when you played Doom for the first time? Halo is first game to meet and handily exceed that feeling. Its worth the price of the Xbox alone.
DOA3: I finally got to play this game a lot today and it gets my vote for the best fighter ever, beating out Soul Calibur. The graphics are so good that you think you are playing a Jackie Chan movie. The game play is really addicting and you find yourself wanting to play just one more fight.
In short, go out and get an Xbox!

the gamecube and the xbix blew the ps2 out of the water when it comes to graphics. ps2 has THPS3 on it BTW.
gamecube had lugi's mansion, rouge leader, and wave race. I played wave race and i hated it. graphics looked good though. I just sucked at driving those jet ski's around and foudn it frustrtating. i find it likly that if i had played it for more than 5 minutes that i probably would have gotten more skilled at it and liekd it more but i was in a store so i didnt have much time/ lugis mansion bored me too. Rogue leaders intro level graphically looked nice and was kinda fun. was not super fun though but it was the intro level and i didnt do much fighting. just blow up some towers. i imagine it gets better but the stupid gamecube diplay resets like every 5 minutes so i couldnt get very far into thte game.
Xbox had nfl fever. im not much of a football fan but the grpahics are pretty damn nice. seemed liek it would be fun to play against friends. i heard madden was better but i seen videos of that and it didnt look as good to me.
The only reason I don;t have an xbox right now is because MGS2 is on playstion 2. ill probably break down and get an xbox though and cross my fingers MGS2 shows up on xbox eventually

In a few hours it's off to find some Monkey Ball :) and a frickin component video cable since Wal-Mart has no clue what that is. I really want to see RL in HD mode.
Next on the list will be to get an Xbox and sell the PS2 :/

What's the word?
It's cool as heck from very initial impressions. We got it hooked up like 20 mins ago and have played some Super Monkley Ball, in fact Aveil still is. We got ours from Meijers of all places (a big uber grocery store chain in Ohio), and I picked up THPS3, but they had no Rogue Leader or Super Monkley Ball. Therefore we drove to one of the 24 hour Wal-Marts in Columbus and got the latter here.
The game looks to jam packed with gameplay. I'm amazed they didn't put a mascot on this game people... Give it that and this would have been _The AAA Title_ that everyone wanted. I can't wait to put in THPS3, but this game is just amazingly refreshing. I'll talk more later, but well I want to play.

OK, got my XBox delivered yesterday and dedicated about 3 hours to Halo, 1 hour to Madden, and decided to return the un-opened "bundled" Munch to the store to get something better after playing its demo off the Halo disk.
Madden: not much change from PS2 .. but damn its pretty. had 2 people think i was watching a pro game last night when they were just "passing through" the room. not much a better compliment than that I guess. The play is much slower than 2k or fever, but it has better play depth and team rosters and such. i like Madden better than the arcade-type play of the others.
Halo: warning: starts off very slow IMHO. I was somewhat disappointed the first 30 minutes during the abandon-ship sequence. Felt like more of the same FPS and the controls were a bitch to get used to. once I got to the planet surface, I began to play with the controller configs and found the southpaw setting worked best for me and it felt more natural .. the environment was impressive .. and I was finding the "group-attack" gameplay fun. BUT HOLY-SHIT WHEN YOU MOVE PAST THIS POINT IT GETS BADASS .. the jeep, the night-fighting, the sniping, the team-chatter. This game starts slow, but so far it is shaping up to be one of the best games I've played.
Now .. what game to get with the credit from returning Munch .. hmmmmmm (after hearing impressions of it I'm glad I never opened it hehe)

Rogue Squadron 2: All that and a bag of chips. Its awesome.
Waverace: Takes only a few minutes to get used to the controls, I don't see what people are complaining about. Looks great, plays great.
Luigi's Mansion: I've only played it for 30 minutes but I'm surprised how much I am enjoying it. Not bad at all
Tony Hawk 3: Still have yet to play it. Have to head off in a few minutes to watch some meteors.
I'm bummed out that we still have to wait 2 weeks to play Pikmin (what I'm really psyched for) and Super Smash Bros Melee
Conclusion: Buy a PS2 with Metal Gear Solid 2, Grand Theft Auto 3, and Devil May Cry
Throw Capcom VS SNK 2 in there for kicks :)
DOA3 and Abe! OMG!!! X-BOX Fucking rules dudes and dudettes. I didn't like any fighting games since MK3 and now I'm back and loving it. I got DOA3 just for graphics but once I started playing it I couldn't stop for hours now. The gameplay is fucking addictive and I don't even know moves (haven't read the manual yet). Tried Abe first and I love it too, the game is fucking hilarious and fun. I also got Halo but I haven't played it yet.

I saw a Best Buy ad saying XBox had a 6 GB HD. I thought they settled on 8 GB, which was down from 10 GB? Is it 6 or 8?
Except there is one FUCKING thing that is bugging me right now. My girlfriend kicks my ass at DOA3.
Got to go, need some practice.

Just to let you guys know, a LOT of posts are being marked as "Tangent," as they really don't have to do with the launch. If you want most people to see your posts about that kind of stuff, please take them to FP. As I said in the post, I'm trying to keep this thread fairly focused. So asking about video outs or other things isn't really condusive to that. Thanks.

DOA3: Very pretty DOA2
Gotham: Sorta pretty MSR
NFL Fever: Plays more like NFL2K2 than Madden. Awesome looking players. Pass percentage way too high.
Halo: Best console FPS. Co-op mode is a blast.
Fusion Frenzy sober: Lame and boring.
Fusion Frenzy drunk w/ 3 friends: Good fun!
Gamecube in T-minus 7 hours!
Not my best work.
