Late Night Consoling
by jason bergman, Nov 12, 2001 8:30pm PSTIn honor of the imminent launches of the Xbox and GameCube, tonight kicks off Launch Week here at LNC. Each night I'll spotlight a launch title for a different console system, some of which are classics, and some...well, some just plain suck.
- Having already reviewed Halo, GameSpot has moved on to the other Xbox launch titles, and tonight they have reviews of Munch's Oddysee and Dead or Alive 3. Although they're very different games, both were awarded 7.9 scores.
- Also at GameSpot is a review of Golden Sun for the GameBoy Advance (8.6), as well as a preview of Super Mario Advance 2.
- A new edition of The GIA's Commercial Break is up tonight with more ca-razy commercials from Japan, including new ones from WonderSwan Color, GameCube and PS2 games.
- Here are some new shots from Soul Calibur 2, the arcade version of which is apparently nearing completion.
- Well, it was rumored, but it looks like it's true: the Xbox will not be a progressive-scan capable DVD player. How odd.
- A ton of new shots and movies from Final Fantasy X can be found at PS2.IGN. These were originally for their paid subscribers only, but are now available to the general public.
- Also at PS2.IGN is a review of Agent Under Fire, which they awarded a 7.9 (what's up with this number tonight?).
- Retro fans rejoice: a new collection of Atari classics is headed to the GBA. Unlike most compilations of this sort, these are actually games I really want to play on a handheld, including Tempest, Super Breakout and Battlezone.
- Xbox.IGN has conducted another Q&A with Tomonobu Itagaki, the man behind Dead or Alive 3, talking about his final pre-launch thoughts on the game.
- Hm...according to Miyamoto, there are "a large number of online games in development" for the GameCube. But Nintendo still won't launch their online network until they think it's a viable business model.

Only game that ever made em' play games.
I knew munch's would suck ass (other than being pretty), but i thought dead or alive 3 would get at least 9.

High Level?
Best comeback?
I can't remember my score or high level but I know on NES and Gameboy versions I made it into the mid-teens, usually screaming like a girl at how fast the bricks were falling

I've got a set of pads here at home with 3rd & 4th mix, but the soft "NES Powerpad" style pad are TEH UHLTRAH SUCK
So what I'd like to know is if anyone has used the hard pads that you can find on EBay. They're like $200 for a set or so, but if the pads were really cool it would be worth it... Seriously, the money I've blown at Gameworks would cover the cost of these and now my roommate has offered to split the cost with me. But I've heard good and bad about these and so I'd like to find out more. Plus we're both about 200lbs, and the ebay auction info for these list them as only being able to take 160lbs. Anyone know anything more? Jason, you grand guru of console knowledge you?

To add something...... I played a gamecube at best buy sunday. Gotta say, in the xbox and gamecube's defense, their extremely wonky looking controllers actually feel pretty good in your hands. I'll give it to the cube though, the controller just felt RIGHT in my hands. I was worried the D-Pad would be inaccessible, but that's not the case. The analog triggers with their "click" is a pretty cool and feasible idea too. And I still like nintendo's analog joysticks better than sony's or microsoft's.

The only blemish on the sterling setup is the inability of members in your party to target another enemy if their intended target has been killed before their turn to attack comes up.
So, like Final Fantasy I then? Wonderful... I had nightmares about ineffective when I used to play that game.
Any SNES-like RPGs is fine in my book
