Console Orgy!

Here's a good article detailing the 3way action (another one at NYTimes, thanks TheOccifer) going on between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo in the console wars. If you consider yourself a gamer (or a human being) you no doubt enjoy the very concept of 3way action.

market leader Sony has built a strong bunker against the interlopers, having shipped more than 20 million PlayStation 2 machines since its debut last year [...] Microsoft plans to spend $500 million to market the Xbox during the 18 months after launch, while Nintendo is budgeting $457 million for marketing this year for both GameCube and its new Game Boy hand-held player. [...] Sony is suffering one of its worst financial periods ever and can't afford an expensive battle with cash-rich Microsoft
Also, a few people have noted that there are fully playable XBox systems at a few computer stores with the full versions of Halo and other games available to play.

  • Went to EBX yesterday and today on my lunch break, and what do you know, they have an XBox running real playable games. Yesterday it was Halo, today DOA3. I didn't get to play Halo because this guy was hogging the system, but I wasn't that impressed. Looked like yet another FPS, except no mouse and keyboard. Looked sorta like UT with better models. Nothing really eye popping, IMO.

DOA3, on the other hand... DAMN! This was by far the best-looking game I've ever seen, console or not. The models were very detailed and high-poly, but the really impressive thing was the backgrounds. I'm sure everyone has seen the pics, but you don't really appreciate it until you see the leaves falling, the waves hitting the beach, in person. It's very impressive. Played a little bit, but having never played DOA before it was sorta rough. Button-mashed my way to like the 3rd stage, then gave it up to the other people waiting.

Also, the Circuit City Express in the same mall has a GC stand set up. Can't play it because the controllers aren't plugged in for some reason. Saw Rogue Squadron running, looked very impressive, but DOA looked better. Rogue Squadron looked very good, though. It definitely gave you the impression of watching the movies.

Oh, I also played NFL Fever on the XBox a few days ago. Looked good, but not significantly better than Madden on the PS2. Nothing to write home about.

GC demo units have a much better quality TV than the Xbox units.
