XP / 2K Comparison

Clean install of XP is the only way to go. NTFS all the way too. I've been running XP for like 4 months now... very nice. Haven't had a problem except for GeForce2Go drivers being screwed up now and again.

Issue: The other day, my Windows 2000 machine just died. I installed some Detonator drivers, it wouldn't come back up..something about a corrupt file, Systemced. I looked it up on MS site, apparently if the registry or system hive gets too big, the PC won't boot. The only way to fix it is from backup. I don't have a recent backup of the registry so I formatted my system drive and want to install either XP or Win2k.
When I try Win2k, the PC hangs while it's copying files(hangs at cdaudio.sys). When I try WinXP, the PC just reboots after it finishes loading drivers in the blue text-mode portion of the setup, just before it's supposed to say "Setup is loading Windows XP". Any techies have an idea on how to fix this? I upgraded my bios(ASUS CUV4X-E) to the latest version. I don't have any weird hardware in my PC, just standard stuff (SBLive, Geforce 2MX, I took out the rest and it still does it).

I just wish XP had decent Voodoo4 drivers. I'm using some hacked ones that still don't work with Myth III. I'll probably build a new system this summer (and use some parts from this system to boost my linux box) so I don't wanna buy a new video card yet.

I've been using XP for a while and it just seems horribly sluggish compared to 2k, even with all the eye candy turned off. I've got a pretty decent system, so its not that. But IE and Explorer just seem 2x slower then on my Win2k install. Deleting files is faster in explorer, but everything else, ugh.

i tried to install winXP upgrading my win2k install this mourning but it crashes every time. I think its configuring hardware im going to take out my sound card and if that doesnt fix it my network card, and unplug any USB devices i have.

if that doesnt work i guess ill do a clean install. if that doesnt work back goes on w2k.

i dont know if its winXPs fault though... it might be the media its on...

clueless people shouldn't be allowed to own computers. they should at least know enough to leave technical stuff to people with a FUCKING CLUE GODDAMNIT.

XP is to 2000 what ME was to 98. Useless.

Good article. Guess I won't be needing XP for a long time unless they have some type of UBER-SP in the works...
I think anyone with eXPerience knows that 2k is sufficient, unless you're big into a candy type GUI....which is, btw, another MS ripoff from a competitor once again.

Well I've been using XP for the last 3 days and after the WORST INSTALL EVARTM was finally resolved (XP does NOT like virtual channel sdram) I can say I'm actually very happy with it. I freely admit I'm an eye candy bitch so I love the UI. Havent had a crash yet (after the whole WIE thing) and the games I've installed so far (AvP2, Civ3, Myth3, Quake3, Op:Flash and Diablo2) run great.

I have no desire to even try XP. Win2k owns.
