Time and time again, guys would ask her out. The dates always consisted of her being picked up by the guy, at her apartment. The usual small talk would happen on the ride there. That part, she liked. Just talking to the guy was fun.
After ariving at the club, a few drinks till too many, the guy usually lost interest in her. He would wander off, only telling Kathy he was "going to the bathroom" if she was lucky. He would then proceed to find some other girl, hopefully already drunk, hoping to score without having to work on her.
She was nearly broke, so she couldn't call for a cab. She didn't know what to do.
Moving to New York had been a big step for the 21 year old blonde. She had come out here to strike it big, in what, not even she knew.
Five monthes earlier, her best friend had moved to New York to (hopefully) help further her stage acting career. For the first three or four weeks, Kathys friend was writing letters every two days, telling Kathy how fun New York was, and how she had to move out here as soon as she could.
"Fun my ass!", she cursed to herself. "I would rather be back in that small mid-west town working at Dairy Queen again!!" She had been able to hold a job, and had been going from resturaunt to resturaunt as waitress to pay bills.
She looked around. The rain wasn't going to stop, infact, it was starting to rain harder and harder as the time passed. The cover of the clubs entrance was nice and dry, but standing under it all night wouldn't get her back to her studio apartment any faster. She grabbed a newspaper off the top of a trash bin that someone discarded hours early, put it over her head, and struck out into the night.
She had made it three blocks before reaching the overhang of another clubs entrance. The newspaper was sogged, and dripping washed out ink into her hair. Her mascera was running down her face, and her dress was offering no protection. She sat on the curb, thinking about the hell that New York had been for her. She started crying again, this time uncontrollably. She didn't care who saw her.
It was three in the morning, and there weren't that many people out. So she was startled when a hand touched her shoulder. She had been mugged the first week she moved out to the city, and didn't feel like having it happen again.
She jerked around violently, still tears in her eyes, and yelled, "GET AWAY!! BACK OFF!"
It was a woman. She asked Kathy, "Are you okay, dear?"
Kathy wiped her tears away long enough to see the person. It was, at this point, apparent to her that whoever it was, they weren't trying to mug her.
"Ye... no, I'm NOT fucking okay!! I've been ditched AGAIN, I'M SOAKING WET, AND I HATE THIS FUCKING TOWN!!" Kathy screamed out.
The woman looked Kathy over. Blonde hair, blue eyes...
