Kalo let us know about this forum post on the Bungie.org forums by Bungie's Matt Soell announcing that their Xbox launch title Halo has gone gold.

All of us worked very hard to get to this point and we are collectively very proud of what we have done. Over the last few years Halo has attracted a lot of attention, and it's safe to say Halo will be the first Bungie game for a huge number of people. But it's not a fluke or a freak accident or a case of being in the right place at the right time. It's the latest chapter in the ongoing story of Bungie, which started ten years ago and is still being written. Like all our stories, it's full of dips and twists and weirdness. Sincere thanks to those of you who keep reading. :-)

Of course, as we all know, Halo started out as a PC/Mac title but after Bungie was bought by Microsoft it became an Xbox title. There could still be a PC version, though nothing is known about that at this point.

Nice one, Bungie, you sell out fucks. I see absolutely no other motivation for this being an X-Box exclusive only title other than the ever-present dollar.

I'm no hardcore tech-head when it comes to Macs, PCs and X-Boxes as far as portability is concerned - but the similarity between the X-Box and PC architecture would suggest this could be ported pretty much effortlessly. And, because they preached Mac and PC support from day one ( and continue to today ) this suggests that a Mac port in addition to a PC port from the X-Box version, is pretty much immediately feasible in every sense of the word.

My point ? They have the foundation in place to essentially port at will - i.e. now. i.e. - simultaneous releases on all formats are doable.

But they aren't.

Why ? Because that Microsoft dollar is just too fucking tantalising. Fuck that. This kind of shit really annoys me, gaming companies have really lost that humble edge they used to have - just take a look at it. They're all corperations chasing dollars and profits; not pushing envelopes and having fun.

I read some admirable points in this thread earlier on along the lines of 'fuck the marketers' and 'hoorah to the devs' - personally, I believe if the devs had any REAL integrity, this Microsoft take-over and X-Box exclusive wouldn't have happened. I see this in the music industry ALL the time, and now I'm seeing it in the gaming industry - NOONE is remaining humble nor true to themselves and their ambitions. It's come down to dollars, just like the rest of this money hungry world, and it's fucking saddening.

I'm entitled to my opinion as much as the next guy; and I'm smellin' corperate turds in every syllable of the words 'Halo' and 'Bungie'.

Give me Duke Forever - that game will get my dollar.

Halo will most probably get a $2 blank CD and rar'ed.

anyone that reads the forums over at halo.bungie.org knows this title is only "xbox exclusive" in the sense that no other console is gonna get their grubby little hands on it, so to speak. ms would be stupid if they didn't let them port this to the pc, which i have no doubt could be done in ~6 months considering the similarities between pcs and the xbox...

Question: Is the X-Box version multiplayer? I guess they could get away without it, but that wouldn't fly on the pc.

Maarten is wrong. The official position of Bungie and MS is that there will be a Mac and PC version. I guess you could assume they are lying, and even if they are as committed as they claim to be plans could always change, but the plan for now is that Halo will be released for PC and Mac, just like the plan has been for months and months now. Some of you are getting very upset about an ambiguity or whatever that simply does not exist. Chill baby baby.

And a little something to think about: there is no conceivable reason for Bungie/MS to say that they are planning on a PC/Mac version if they really aren't. If they were planning to make Halo Xbox-only, it would be far more in their better interest to say so now, to get people onboard who would otherwise wait for the PC/Mac version.

I gotta throw my two cents in here.

last weekend, I was able to take an xbox home for the weekend (take a guess where I work). the box had halo on it.

believe the hype. halo. is. awesome.

the controls take a bit getting used to for hardcore FPS players (like me), but once you get the hang of it (and even before you get the hang of it), you'll realize that this is a great game.

I have nothing against Bungie for selling themselves to Microsoft, but they can BOTH go fuck off for making this an X-Box exclusive title.
I hope the imminent failure of the XBox, and consequently this title, makes Bungie feel as if they've thrown one of their own children to the wolves, because they have.

I won't be buying an Xbox so I guess I won't be buying Halo. I would like to say they fucked the community for the almighty dollar, but 1) thats probably not totally true 2) what community and 3) I'm just bitter I won't be playing this on my PC.

Ok, What the fuck is with the non-disclosure of the PC Version status?? I mean, if they DONT release a PC version in tamdum with the XBOX version, or VERY VERY VERY soon afterwords (like, a week), then they are seriously cutting themselves off from lots of money, including mine for one.
