Fiber Optic CPUs

Photonic based computing(light-only) is the future of computers IMO.

Yeah, well, ironically, fiber optics are good for running wires between transistors, but you still need to convert to electrical signals for silicon to work. There's no way right now of making "optical transistors" to create logic gates. How pricy is it to convert an electrical signal to light, make it go a distance, then convert it back to an electrical signal? Take a 1 Million gate design (Intel/AMD/NVidia are much higher). Each logic gate averages 4 transistors (inverters have 2, XOR's have 8, Nand's have 4, DFF's can have 6 I think). Each logic gate output could connect to an average of 2 (no more than 4-6) inputs down the line. Most logic gates have 2 inputs, 1 output. Well, I managed to confuse myself, but that's a hell of a lot of wires to be converting to and from light.

cool, my laser tech teacher in high school said this would happen over 4 years ago.

less heat, less power, less latency... optical processors have been under development for a long time now.. I can't wait till they start to hit the market. :)
