Deus Ex Details
by Steve Gibson, Sep 19, 1999 11:45am PDTThe VN Deus Ex messageboard has some word from Warren Spector of Ion Storm on the upcoming RPG'ish Deus Ex: Thanks Billy
We don't have stats, in the traditional paper RPG sense -- no strength, dexterity, wisdom, etc. We do have skills you can upgrade, augmentations you can select and upgrade during play, a limited amount of inventory space you can fill up with items of your choosing, and so on. In a game like DX, which we hope will immerse you in an alternate world, stats used to differentiate characters and in action resolution just don't make sense. For us, action resolution comes in direct interaction with the varied elements of our gameworld. And we can differentiate characters from one another more effectively by sticking with skills, augmentations and so on, as described above.

you guys are so intelligent and open minded :)

Seriously. I used to be an avid \"paper\" RPGamer, and I enjoyed it alot, but one of the major drawbacks in my opinion was the rigid stat system. The old D&D/AD&D system with strength, wisdom, dexiterity, and so on, only serves to limit the immersion and realism. After a while I drifted to other RPG\'s, with different ways of handling the whole stat thing (TORG, for example). After another while I started playing Quake-like games on my computer instead, and I\'ve done that since :)
But back to my point. You may have misunderstood Warren slightly, I\'m not sure how carefully you read his post. But I believe the way Deus Ex will be handling character development is much better than the rigid stat system of D&D and most other RPG\'s, computer and paper versions alike. It makes for a more realistic and immersive gaming experience, and less focusing on numbers and bonuses all the time.
Those of you who say things like \"no character development\" and \"then it isn\'t an RPG\", have either completely misunderstood Warren and his plans, or you don\'t know what you\'re talking about.
I for one will be getting this game when it comes out.. even if the box does have the dreaded name of ION Storm on it.
