Blizzard Fighting Agriculture
by Steve Gibson, Oct 15, 2001 3:59am PDTA World of Warcraft preview that was mentioned yesterday by Maarten had something really interesting I wanted to point out for some good old discussion. The Blizzard guys are going to be attempting to rid the MMORPG of the glorious past times that so many of us embrace. No item farming or camping. Can you believe that? They are actually working towards eliminating those aspects of the game.
No Camping, no Item Farming: It's being said again by the team -- their top priority is to keep the game moving, not encourage people to sit by bushes waiting to kill a creature holding a specific object. This is the same company that made Diablo II, so they understand the importance of throwing unique objects out into the world, but they also want to balance that with a game that keeps the action flowing.Oh my! Can anyone even really imagine that?

DAoC rocks. You get items faster so it feels more like diablo than say EQ. I'm always running back to town to sell my stuff and buy something. Really as for payoffs, DAoC is somewhere between Diablo and EQ, but more to the Diablo side.

actualy that bridge builder game is an example of this on a limited scale: there are no pre-defined solutions to reach the goal of the game. you don't need to figure out what the game designer wants you to do.
there's just a set of basic, self-evident game rules within which many solutions are possible. there are a limited number of 'best' solutions but many other solutions are good enough. finding a solution is entirely up to player creativity and intellect. in spite of the very limited gameworld of bridge builder, it is actualy interesting.

Collecting items is a big part of MMORPGS.
