More Voodoo4 Delay Quotes
by Jack Mathews, Sep 18, 1999 7:13pm PDTSteve mentioned a little earlier about Scott Sellers' quotes on the Silicon Investor boards. Well, Patrick Grinsell also got some comments from 3dfx President/CEO Greg Ballard. He says that the problems are known and solved, but may not make Q4. Also that 3dfx hasn't been trying to fool the market, but that it's a surprise to them as well. Here's pieces of the quotes, you can go here to read the whole thing.
"I think a number of the people on the boards interpreted this to mean that we have been out spreading that word for "months" behind the back of the average retail investor. In fact, we have been making this statement for less than a week only to investors that we have talked to when they call us." "I do think they [the problems] are resolved, although we are still assessing this, but they took much, much longer to resolve than we thought. Now the question is whether we have left ourselves enough time." "[The problems were] Completely unanticipated and due, in large part, to the enormous complexity of this chip."

Yes, AA is cool. Don\'t get me wrong. But given the choice between more polygons and full-screen AA, only a moron would pick full-screen AA. Yes, that means you, #46.
Why do you think developers are so excited about the playstation 2? Because it does full-screen AA? No, because you can use a bazillion polygons, which makes everything look dramatically better.
However, you notice a big difference if you see any recent card (as opposed to prehistoric v1s). T&L won\'t really make a big difference on current games, but as more and more people have cards that support it, developers will begin to push more and more polygons, or have \"Super\" high detail modes, that put the T&L to work. AA helps immensely, though admittedly at high resolutions, it helps less (well appears to)
3Dfxs\' problem has been that it doesn\'t evolve its\' products. V1 was \"groundbreaking\", and from there, it\'s basically been the same crap, just tack on another chip and other crap features. By the time they get v4 out the door, all of its\' new features will already be on like 4 other chips. They used to be 5 steps ahead, now they are slowly getting behind, while Nvidia is constantly getting further ahead.
same thing with 32bit color dude.
how many people actually notice that while playing online ?
i know i havent been able to spot the difference. im not legally blind or retarded either. If i am able to afford an NV10, im gonna run it at 800x600 in 16bit color. i dont need ultra high fillrate to get constant high FPS with those settings :)
Anyway, when I see both of these cards running Q3Test at various resolutions, then I will make up my mind about whether T&L or fillrate matters more. Until then it\'s just hard to say.
I guess it\'s kind of true that lack of T&L on the Voodoo4 might \"hold back\" designers, but I don\'t think it will be that bad... they might just put in lower detail settings. As for support for huge textures, look at games that are out right now, and see how many use huge textures. None. And when they do, they make cards like the TNT crawl. So once again, 3dfx provided features that matter. Even if you look at the most texture-heavy game out right now, Unreal, you will see that textures look best on 3dfx cards. The Unreal engine until recently doesn\'t even have \"detail textures\" on non-3dfx cards, and still runs slower on them. Ok so Epic sucks at OpenGL, but still.
I know 3dfx is not top-of-the-line right now, that\'s why I\'m probably going for a GeForce. But I don\'t think they\'re \"evil\", they give the customer what he wants.
Which brings me to #18...
i have 2 peices of 3dfx crapass products now, 2 flavors of
pure hatred (v3 3000 + v3 3500)
Ok... How the fuck did you end up buying BOTH the V3000 and the V3500, and hating them both. Didn\'t you read the writing on the box??? If you hate them both (and I have NO CLUE why you would need two cards that are so similar), then you have only yourself to blame. Next time read some reviews, hell, read what it says on the damn box!
Just like voodoo3 would have discouraged the use of larger textures and 32bit color in games targeted towards it, now if NV10 and Savage2000 come out with T&L but other non T&L cards do well also, then that\'s just going lower the amount of polys we\'re going to see in games.

Although i agree with you as far as 32-bit color issue goes ( i personally dont give a crap about it anyways, even though i have a TNT).
T&L and improvements WILL be noticeable right away. Try playing quake3 with \"r_lodbias 2\". or world geometry set to minimal. You will notice an increase in framerate. I know that i can\'t play q3test2 without doing that, because my PC starts to majorly slow with 3,4 player onscreen at the same time. With T&L, all that will be taken care of.
It will make a considerable impact, it might not increase framerate by a huge ass margin, but it will make them a lot more consistent.
Though personally, i couldnt afford it heh. It\'ll cost like $450 Canadian and i\'ll probably go for the TNT2U. They should be cheap then.
Noone listen to BEzlebutt, he is a dumb ass, \'nuff said..

One\'s sorry (3000) and one\'s even more sorry (3500 BECAUSE IT AINT WORTH THAT MUCH, DONT BUY IT, IF YOU DO YOU\'RE A M***F**KIN* MORON)
i\'m gonna sell my cards to all the dumb kids in school, for cheap ofcourse because dumb kids are always poor.

You fail to understand something: 32-bit color and T&L didn\'t matter when Voodoo3 came out, and still hardly even matters now. The only game where 32-bit makes a difference is Q3, and that will not be out probably until Voodoo4 is out (or shortly before).
So they were right then, and they are right now, there is no \"about-face\" it\'s just the market evolving.
But Nvidia is giving designers tools to change gaming
You could look at it that way I suppose... but you can also look at it another way: 3dfx is giving gamers the hardware they need *now*, nVidia is putting in features that they might or might not use *later*. By the time Quake3 hits the market as the first game that really uses 32-bit, my TNT will be obsolete, so the 32-bit I had all this time will go totally unused. Why should I be upset at 3dfx that they didn\'t offer a feature I never needed anyways?? It just seems to me like they positioned their products perfectly, I\'m sure the Voodoo3 was less expensive because 3dfx didn\'t \"add\" 32-bit support to it, and price is a big concern too.
AA isn\'t a big deal to me, since I hardly notice it.
Just out of curiosity, do you use AA right now on your card? Didn\'t think so. So how can you talk about how you \"notice it\"?
More POLYS and less CPU usage WILL be
noticeable.
WILL is the key word here, yet, but when?
The only question is will games in the future tax the CPU enough that they will be unplayable unless you have T&L. I\'m sure eventually all games will be like this, but I\'m not so sure about Quake3.
By the way, I notice some contradiction in your post, \"Nearly everyone so far refuses to believe any non T&L product could possibly compete\", but \"most people just don\'t realiz...]\", it seems like you\'re trying to support both of your contradictory statements by claiming they are popular opinion.
G-Force 256...uh, the 64 MB version that is. Don\'t care much what it will cost either...still have a TNT1 and skipped the TNTU. Never was into 3fdx too much anyway (but who cares huh?) ;)
