Q3A vs UT
by Steve Gibson, Sep 18, 1999 4:46pm PDTA post by Christian Antkow of id Software to the Shack UT Messageboard addresses something I've agree got to agree with. Comparing the full featured UT demo to the bare bones technology test Q3Test. Feel free to respond on the board.
I found the UT Demo quite enjoyable. Good job Epic. But something for all you "UT vs Q3A" people who are bickering back and forth about the merits and shortcomings of either product, keep in mind, Q3Test was just that, a technology test. We haven't even released a demo yet.

I think that UTDemo is basically Quake 1 deathmatch with homing rockets, but you are compelled to use the other weapons because they can be as effective as the rocket launcher. I can\'t tell you how many times I fell to my death instead of regaining my footing because I wanted to watch as my homing rocket hit its target, even at the expense of the frag I was deriving from it.
Personally I am waiting for the first single-player shooter using the Quake 3 engine, and I hope to hell it is going to be \"HalfLife 2\". I don\'t want to see dozens of DM clones of these 2 games. It is good that Epic are creating a DM-only game too, because it will, at the least, keep id honest, and at best give us an alternative to a game that a lot of people may not like the feel of either.
The problem with alot of you guys is that you are too caught up in the personalities at the game companies producing these great games and can\'t judge each game solely on its merits. I am an id loyalist through and through, but Epic have comeup with something special too, and that should drive both companies to produce even better games.
// yeah well if i was LPB maybe i\'d like q3test more
// but as it is UT is a lot more playable on a modem
modem play sucks big time for me with UT compared to Q3, on both my ISPz... UT is fun though whoopin on the bots, but UT netcode blows for me.
weapons: no contest to q3test. unreal\'s wierd-ass penis-pump melee weapon, that weak-as-ass minigun, and that... um... wierd rocket launcher... they just don\'t feel good. The weapons just don\'t feel \'solid\'... not sure how to define it.
interface: unreal tourney - do I *really* need to justify this? Every possible interface element you could want is on there, down to the location and job on ctf mode... (although the fonts suck for ut)
level design - q3test. unreal guys might as well be designing hamster mazes for labratories. those maps are confusing & blocky. They try to do things which they can\'t do with their system requirements, makes it look like crap.
graphics: q3test, hands down... although I do love that unreal water ever so much...
modes: uh, for now, unreal... because q3test doesn\'t have anything besides deathmatch (although it\'s got several deathmatch modes...)
bots: ??? don\'t like bots anyway.
music: q3test. because the ut music gets really annoying after a while.
Id seems to be confused. They\'ve got a game that seems to be geared towards newbies in the playing arena (i.e. nothing ever kills in one shot), and hardcore techniques (strafe jumping) are cut down. But then they\'ve got a shit interface thats not changed since wolfenstien. UT\'s interface kicks so much ass its unreal (literally).
Actually I brought up those points in #104. I hate not being able to tell whether or not I\'m hitting my enemy. And the models are too \"wirey\" to be noticed far away. But I still love the damn game! =P

#101 is right.. q3 isn\'t for the hardcore gamer as much as it is for the general mostly newbie public. I really feel that UT is more geared towards hardcore gamers. It just FEELS right.. fast and locked-down.
And oh my god, the environments and atmophere are F*CKING brilliant. They make you wanna stop and whip out your Nokia Camera and take tourist shots with your family! :)
you go man!! =)
UT is just a big wannabe q3, every single ut weapon looks like a over complicated hoobjoob.
its mainly the weapons and the feel of the game that turns me off. Q3 feels so much more up beat, violent, and action packed.
this is how i compare the 2 games:
UT= \"BAD RAP\" Q3= \"1337 industrial goodness\"
I feel this way be cause most Rap is a bunch of unexperainced fools jumping around to horable lirycs. Thus stating that ut is a bunch of \"shiny ideas\" no original concepts.
Q3 on the other hand is made bye id. id being the most experianced game developer for \"first person shooters\" and after the succes of Q2 multie who do you think knows how to make a better online multie player game.
The actual fact that anyone could state that they like UT better meens that they dont get around much.
im not gonna bad mouth UT any more due to that fact that i havent played the full version. AND!! the q3 that we know today is only a test, and look how kick ass it is. I can only amagin how good the final game will be.
If you ask me UT is trying to hard.
if yah dont like what ive just said you can kiss my ass.
W00PA!
Increasing radius damage, or damage radius or even increasing the speed would mean a return to Quake. Do you guys really want to throw away all the other weapons ? The RL is very powerful right now if you know how to use it. And if you know how to use any other weapons, you should be able to bring down someone with the RL too. Isnt this what everyone wants ? or do you want the entire \"race to the rl\" syndrome repeated in Quake3. I absolutely love Quake and the Quake RL, but i really dont think it would fit-in with Quake3.
Another variation of primary fire is to hold the cross hairs over a target until you hear a BEEP, and the cross turns red. The the rocket becomes a homming missle. It\'s really not a easy thing to do in a deathmatch, but very cool nevertheless.
