Voodoo4 Delay?

Some not so good news for those of you waiting on that Voodoo4 aka Napalm. Scott Sellers of 3dfx is quoted in an email exchange with Patrick Grinsell as follows. That is the entire quote below which is.. bad. Guess we'll know for sure in a week or two. Keep in mind this is not fully confirmed, however generally users on siliconinvestors rarely 'mess around'

"What we have been telling others in the financial community is that there is significant risk at this time that napalm will not hit the 4th quarter. We believe that there is still a chance that we can make the quarter, but each day we are getting closer to knowing the actual likelihood. We should know within a week or two whether it will make the quarter. But right now, it is substantially at risk."

  • SGI isn\'t really a consumer company, but their techinians have been using T&L for years now. They know their shit, hell.. they own openGL. So by the time the next 3DFX chip ACTUALLY comes out, nVidia will probblay have a new chip already in production with at least 50 million polys, and full scene AA, motion blur and DOF focus just as bullet points on their products.

All these 3DFX junkies are bitching about the T&L, and how nobodyw illt ake advantage of it for a long time, but lok at themselves. who the FUCK need full scene AA at 1280x1024? with the GeForce your framerate wil never drop below your maximum fill rate. Jam 8 quake3 marines into one room and watch the 3DFUX totally die when they start shooting, while the GeForce will just rip those fucking polys right up.

Nobody will be making games with motion blur and DOF effects until nvidia procducts support it, since everybody will have a GeForce by the time the v00d00 4 is even announced.

  • #12: and what has SGI done in the consumer market lately? That\'s right, nothing. SGI is in much worse shape than 3dfx, even their logo sucks ass now.

BTW, the T-buffer was worked on long before the SGI and nVidia shit, and you do NOT know if the V4 will suck or not, even if you think you do.

#14: the Glaze3D is vapourware right now just like V5/NV15 etc. Bitboys have NOTHING to back it up.

Having said all that, 3dfx is in deep shit if they don\'t have a product for christmas. I\'m pretty sure I\'ll buy a GeForce if it comes out in October. I\'ve been waiting for this elusive 3dfx uber-chip for a long time.
