HL v1108 & CS v1.3 Today
by Steve Gibson, Sep 19, 2001 6:30am PDTWe've been hearing about this one for who knows how long it seems but it's finally upon us. Half-Life v1108 as well as Counter-Strike v1.3 are planned to be released at 1pm CST today. We'll be slapping up the info and mirrors etc as you'd expect although as you can see in werd we're still not quite ready with all of our server shuffling. Might pull a rabbit out of our hat though or something. Here's the latest v1108 brief interview at Stomped, and there is a slightly longer one we mentioned yesterday at Speakeasy. Hey lets start bugging them about Counter-Strike v1.4 now!
What are your plans for version 1.4? cliffe: Pretty early to say at this point, with 1.3 just coming out. But I'd really like to get a slightly new gameplay mode in there for mappers to play around with and test out. Nothing is concrete now, but just something to try out. I'll keep our site updated about that and any features for upcoming versions.

Notices
Mr. Johnson from Valve has notices that all CS players should pay attention to:
- If you have an ATI video card, you must run in D3D for the time being. This is a bug that is being worked on.
- Uninstall any OpenGL passthru cheats or you'll be kicked from all servers.

Is valve going to release any info on it? Tell us what the deal is...is it dead..is it alive? Can we expect it in 2002? I honestly dont remember the last time I heard any info on it. They semed to be making progress, untill they decided they had to have the "Commander" class and a new engien. Now it is like four years away!
What I have noticed about game developers and giving information about up comming titles is this:
There are two models to folow.
1. You keep every thing hush hush about the game. You may anounce it, but you dont release any screen shots, or video... Maybe you let a little info out when your polishing the game, but you dont show your hand untill your ready to realese it.
2. You let the community in on what your doing from day one.... you have screen shots on fan pages, and movies showing what your doing. You have message boards for input from the comunity, and your developers can share in the progress of the game...you then have some "MP Test" and some tech demos to help squash bugs and tighten the game play and balance of items and ideas!
Now, my take on these two aproaches...... Im actualy not realy picky on which way they do it... Some examples of type one are Max payne, and Duke4... Max is a good example of being surprised when game comes to market...3d realms kept there hand close to the vest, and were rewarded..there title was origanal...there is no let down factor, because there was no hype with the game. My fealing is that this is the industrys new standard on how to develop a title! I dig it.... I just go about my buisness...and when a game is done, it is done!
Example of way 2 would be Quake, quake2, quake3, Wolf, etc...this is good and bad... the good is that when the game comes out, we know what to expect. Most of us either love it or hate it, but we know...so we can decide befor we even buy it(publishers might not like that so much!)... the games are usualy tighter, because most bugs have been found in testing.
The problem... TF2 could not decide which way to go! At first they took aproch number 2... this was a good time..we saw footage from what they had..we got screen shots all the time..... Then, they went into media black out...now were all hanging..and games are comming out that look very simaler to what tf2 was suposed to be... imho this is not good for tf2.... if they had either adopted plan #1 from the beging, or stuck to #2 we would atleast beable to say"Im gona wait for tf2, cause I can see it is going to be the bomb!"...or we would no nothing about it, and when it came out we would all be surprised, at the inovation . But now I doubt that anything they do is going to be inovating, because they showed there hand 2 years ago...and are still working!
It is sad, because it ws the game I was most looking forward to... valve should have leared the leason they taught every one...and that is it is much easyer to develop a game that you dont have to do everythign..ie, now they are writing a engine, and desighning content.... it is to much of a task now a days to deliver a bleading edge game, with good content....

Hopefully Doom III should change that - because TF2 looks like vaporware at the moment.
