DayGamer Opening Soon
by Maarten Goldstein, Sep 18, 2001 8:51am PDTMartin Henriksson pointed us towards the website of DayGamer, a new service where gamers can earn money for playing. Similar to some websites which have been offering the option to "bet" on online games, DayGamer allows players or clans to challenge each other and then put money in the game through a DayGamer Paypal account. But instead of being based on honesty of the players, DayGamer is actually monitoring the game (Counter-Strike, with Quake 3 following soon) so players do not have to report who won. DayGamer keeps 5% of the prize money. A FAQ is available here. The first DayGamer beta release should be this Friday. Think this will catch on?
Some people win all the time. I lose most of the times.
- DayGamer is for the professionals. If your skills are not good enough we suggest that you practice before you enter the money tournaments. The outcome of the games depends on solid skill - not luck. Isn't this considered gambling? - No. Gambling is defined by most countries as involving a "consideration" (wager), an activity involving chance, and a monetary or merchandise reward. Since using DayGamer are based on skill, it's the skill of the player, not luck, which determines the outcome of any tournament, so they are not considered to be gambling activities.

I would not be suprised if the program they call punkbuster is a trojan horse so they have a backdoor into your pc. although I belive most gamers would like a service like this, I dont believe this company (are they even a company?) has the professional look that would attract paying gamers.
also is it just going to be 1 on 1? you should be able to bet on clan games then it would be cool

Its 18 or older, I'm guessing that cuts customers a fair amount...then again it makes it more professional if you know what I mean....I just don't see how this will work without a higher level of interest.

Luck is a great part of CS, its why I like it over Quake3, how many Q3 tournament results do you see where one player wins 10-0 because of map, location, weapon and health domination? Even n00bs will beat down a good CS team every now and then, but two highly skilled Q3 players and one of them doesn't frag once?
Don't make some dumb-ass blanket generalization about how the outcome of CS games has to do completely with the skill of the players involved. That shows an clear misunderstanding of how the game works. A skilled player will more consistently beat an unskilled player, but it ain't all about the skills...

It should be more like skill, luck, and cheats that you don't know about will win the game.
Or is he stupid in thinking that cheating won't multiply now there is money on the table.
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. I give it a month before it implodes.

Then I guess betting on sports isn't gambling either?

I'd feel better just playing friends for cash and knowing they'd Paypal the bet along rather than play kids that are going to be cheating out their asses trying to get some of my green.
I don't see why respectable clans (oxymoron? you decide =)) and players can't just agree to the terms and send the money along later on the honor system. It's probably just as secure, the problem is outside players will infiltrate that system under the guise that they themselves are credible.
People go through great lengths to cheat/hack/packet sniff for less than money.
I say this implodes within a year.
and btw, 5% is too much!
