DayGamer Opening Soon

Martin Henriksson pointed us towards the website of DayGamer, a new service where gamers can earn money for playing. Similar to some websites which have been offering the option to "bet" on online games, DayGamer allows players or clans to challenge each other and then put money in the game through a DayGamer Paypal account. But instead of being based on honesty of the players, DayGamer is actually monitoring the game (Counter-Strike, with Quake 3 following soon) so players do not have to report who won. DayGamer keeps 5% of the prize money. A FAQ is available here. The first DayGamer beta release should be this Friday. Think this will catch on?

Some people win all the time. I lose most of the times.
- DayGamer is for the professionals. If your skills are not good enough we suggest that you practice before you enter the money tournaments. The outcome of the games depends on solid skill - not luck. Isn't this considered gambling? - No. Gambling is defined by most countries as involving a "consideration" (wager), an activity involving chance, and a monetary or merchandise reward. Since using DayGamer are based on skill, it's the skill of the player, not luck, which determines the outcome of any tournament, so they are not considered to be gambling activities.

  • I dont see this lasting to long. #1 the site is poorly constructed. #2 there was no memtion of thier server speed or connection to host the games. #3 this is what really scares me. they dont have a merchant account to process credit cards?....something is really wrong here as merchant accounts are fairly easy to setup and cost very little.

I would not be suprised if the program they call punkbuster is a trojan horse so they have a backdoor into your pc. although I belive most gamers would like a service like this, I dont believe this company (are they even a company?) has the professional look that would attract paying gamers.

  • People can do this without Daygamer's services. I don't see what they expect to offer. You're still using the honor system regarding cheating, and all they bring to the table is a web site matching service, a forum for challengers to meet in before playing, and a match result recording service.

I'd feel better just playing friends for cash and knowing they'd Paypal the bet along rather than play kids that are going to be cheating out their asses trying to get some of my green.

I don't see why respectable clans (oxymoron? you decide =)) and players can't just agree to the terms and send the money along later on the honor system. It's probably just as secure, the problem is outside players will infiltrate that system under the guise that they themselves are credible.
