According to The Register, October 15 will be a busy news day as Intel, Transmeta, AMD and VIA will be announcing their new CPUs at the Autumn Microprocessor Forum. It's expected that AMD will have more info on their 64 bit Hammer CPU, Transmeta will announce a 1Ghz+ Crusoe, Intel will have a desktop/notebook/server CPU update and VIA will have more on their newest C3 processor.

  • I'm assuming that the new Intel desktop/server/notebook chip is the 1.2GHz P3 Tualatin. Kyle at HardOCP already did a review on it (http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/cpus/intel/tualatin/index.html), and in his words, it's "the P3 done right" (albeit much too late). However, that's pretty much the end of the good side; this new CPU needs a whole new board since it isn't electronically socket-compatible with old boards. Also, there are a few Tualatin boards that suck the poo: all of them basically use hacked BIOSes to run the Tualatin. Only the Asus board worked well; the MSI board reported the chip voltages wrong, and the Soyo board wouldn't even register the CPU.

This new CPU holds its own against comparable chips; not far behind a 1.2GHz Athlon running PC133. It also features the heat spreader and lower core voltages, so it runs much cooler. That aspect will make this CPU appealing to use in a notebook or 1U rackmount server.
