Move over Ultima Online and EverQuest, as CoreMagazine is reporting that Sega has announced plans to bring Phantasy Star Online to the PC. While they say that while cross-platform compatibility with the GameCube and Dreamcast versions is possible, they have not decided whether or not to take advantage of this. Recent stories have suggested that the GameCube version may not be compatible with the DC one for security reasons, making a three-way setup unlikely. Not mentioned is what pricing scheme there will be, as PSO Version 2 requires a small subscription fee. A little more information is up at The Magic Box, where they say the PC port will have four times as many polygons and support for six languages.

  • PSO isn't MMORPG enough to be worth a monthly fee, at least to me. It's closer to diablo than anything else, and while diablo (2) is a good game, I wouldn't pay a monthly fee to play that either. The only thing persistant about these worlds is your characters, which isn't worth paying monthly just to keep. Plus, in the case of PSO they're even stored locally so that people can hack them to ruin the game further.

Now, if PSO PC allowed lan or direct tcp/ip play with friends (without paying montly for using their servers), that would be worth getting. There's no reason to have to use official servers for this kind of game anyway.
