Maybe God Doesn't like Unreal

Well, ok, I know he probably doesn't care if we get the Unreal Tournament demo or not, but it seems an "Act of God" ie, Hurricane Floyd will most likely delay the release of the second UT demo, the one that will support OpenGL and Direct3D. From what I understand, the first demo supporting 3Dfx will be released. I'm personally in Charlotte, and I'm getting some rain and wind now... Floyd is east of me, as is Raleigh, where the UT team is located, and it will probably cause some nice flooding, power outages and broken trees. Maybe blow the top off of Epic's office. Who knows. Anyway, here's the info:

Hurricane Floyd is expected to hit Raleigh pretty strongly late this evening and throughout tomorrow. This might be my last email for a while. We're expected to get at least 10 inches of rain and hurricane-force winds. The eye of the hurricane is projected to pass one county over from us (which is VERY close!) but hopefully it will be diminished as it travels over land. In anticipation of the first demo release tomorrow we've launched http://www.unrealtournament.com. The UT web site isn't on a server located in Raleigh so it should stay up. I'll try to update it with our progress if I can keep power. We've sent a build of the demo/test off to 3DFX that could be released tomorrow in the event that we're unable to keep power here tonight. We already experienced a 45 minute power loss but power is back on right now. There are a few minor bugs fixes that we're hoping to fix but if power doesn't stay on that won't happen and the 321 build will get released. We've set up utbugs@epicgames.com for people to report bugs and problems with the demo. We're all backed up and I'll be taking a tape backup home in a waterproof container. For those interested in tracking the hurricane you can visit http://www.ncstormtrack.com - the internet is pretty clogged tonight with people up and down the east coast hitting the weather and news sites for information about the storm. There is a good possibility that we'll lose power for several days which could cause the delay of the 2nd demo (all APIs). If that happens we apologize in advance for any delays. A few days extra wait for a demo is nothing like the disaster that is facing most North Carolina farmers who are expected to lose their entire crops for the year due to this storm. Our hearts and concerns go out them as well as those who will be displaced from their homes or worse. Ok, scratch the above. The security guard for our building just came up and asked us to leave the building. Apparently they're going to bolt the doors of the building so we won't be able to return. Carolina Power & Light told them the power is likely to go out at any time. They already have 15,000 customers without power in the area. We don't know when we'll be able to get back in, hopefully Friday after the storm has passed but we'll only be able to get into the building if it has power. During Hurricane Fran much of Raleigh was without power for an average of 3 days. The authorities say that this storm will be pretty similar to Fran or maybe stronger. We hope 3DFX users enjoys the demo and we'll do the best we can to ship the full demo (with support for all APIs) as soon after Monday as possible given the events of the next day or two. Wish us luck!

  • Heh heh, this is great, everyone here is talking about what\'s better than what and flaming everything they don\'t like, and all I can think is \"Damn, it\'s a great time to be a gamer!\" So you hate everything unless id made it, well good for you! Go play the Q3 test! You don\'t even have to pay for it yet. Same thing with the UT demo. Hardware is dirt cheap and with new demos coming out just about every week for this game or that, you\'ve got hours and hours of gameplay for free. <<doing crotchety old man voice>> I remember when you had to walk uphill buck naked in zero degrees kelvin weather while being attacked by wild llamas just to WATCH your friend play single player Combat on his Atari 2400 on a black and white television, while his parents berated the both of you for being good for nothing whippersnappers! :)

  • not those games were fuckin FAST!!

NOT those games? No? I thought they were pretty fast. Fast indeed, don\'t you think? Bwaahahaha. Ok it was funny for a bit.

Actually my friend, Quake3 is the *same* speed as Quake1, it\'s just that the point of view is higher. They did tests where they converted Q1 levels to Q3 and it takes the same amount of time to cross the level.

And Doom2 was faster, but it wasn\'t 3D so that\'s ok. I think Q3 has the right speed. Half-Life feel slow-mo in comparison. And I don\'t get people who say Q2 is better than Q3, better at what exactly? I can\'t stand the Q2 rocket launcher anymore, those rockets look the size of a peanut, the particles look like crap, and the once-great player models look crummy in comparison to Q3. It\'s mostly graphics but gameplay too. You can get used to those floating powerups, just give it time... Give it time, friends. You *will* come around to the dark sid..., er, Quake3 eventually.

  • Q3Test OWNS *you* LA-boy. I\'ve seen kids like you play Quake2, they feel all comfortable with the slow speed. As soon as you put them in front of Quake3 they start running like chickens with their heads cut off. \"Q3Test sucks!\" they say, but we all know the truth. They can\'t HANDLE the speed, the action. No action handler you are. I deride your action-handling ability! Go home to momma in your slow-mo car driving at the speed limit, and leave those of us who think at the speed of light to Q3Test, the *real* man\'s game.
    Biatch.

  • I really loved the first SystemShock and it\'s probably my favorite game of all time. But SS2 is just too tedious for me to play. I got through a few levels and then I just got back to the pure action in Quake3.

It\'s weird as I get older I seem to go for simpler and simpler games. I used to love sims like Falcon3 but now I couldn\'t be bothered. No time for the learning curve anymore.

So, TF2 will 0wn somewhat, but Quake3 will 0wn more because more people are only willing to play simple arcade-type games. By the way, you can still use a lot of strategies in Quake3.

If you look at the best players in Q/Q2/Q3 they\'re not just good at aiming. They *think*, they predict what their opponet does and use actual strategies.

Some UT twits think that just because UT has more weapons or more gameplay modes it will be more of a \"thinking\" game. Well shit, if I made a 12x12 chessboard instead of 8x8, would people praise me for making more of a \"thinking game\"? They just don\'t get it, it\'s all about weapon balance and tweaking like Quake3, not about throwing in anything that sounds cool + the kitchen sink, like UT/Unreal.

  • Um, I don\'t know where you get your info from, but SS2 has barely any scripted sequences. Maybe 2 per level, and it was mainly things like a certain enemy banging on a corpse with a pipe when you walked by.

As for people who like HL and SS2 not being able to \"handle\" \"real\" fps games, I\'ve played FPS\' since Wolf3D, and I handle them just fine. I enjoy Q2 as much as the next guy, but I also appreciate the need for a story at some point. Maybe you\'re just frustrated because you can\'t handle an in-depth FPS like Half-life or SS2? SS2 and Quake/Unreal type games are very different, but they\'re not mutually exclusive, you can enjoy both if you try.

If anyone\'s interested in SS2, check gamersx.com over the next couple days, they\'ll be posting the HTML of my SS2 guide sometime. You can also download the PDF of it at www.stratosgroup.com.
