Microsoft HomeStation Rumors
by Jack Mathews, Sep 07, 2001 10:54am PDTNormally, I'm not one to post something this unsubstantiated, but it's sort of cool and everyone else seems to have skipped town. Anyway, PC Format has a scoop on the Microsoft Homestation, a supposed PC/XBox hybrid.
The PC/Xbox hybrid will run a version of Windows to form a home entertainment hub. The device will finally turn the idea of digital convergence into a living room reality. Following in the footsteps of the PC-influenced Xbox, the device is likely to be a non-upgradeable sealed unit, with a system board based on nVIDIA's nForce, boasting GeForce graphics and Dolby Digital sound. HomeStation will come equipped for an array of online and offline activities: a sizeable hard drive, broadband connection and compression technology based on Windows Media Player 8 - included with Windows XP - all point to a video-on-demand role.It sounds like the kind of appliance Microsoft has been going for for years - PC on a TV, and PC Format (and The Register) all talk about how it plays into Microsoft's .NET plans. Really this just plays into Microsoft's world domination plans, and .NET is just another extension of OLE (read: ActiveX) that's mostly been rolled out already with all of the IE revisions we've been downloading. Someone wake Steve or Maarten up already.

xbox proponents have long critisied sony for developing the ps2 as being more of a home entertainment system rather than a console. now we have unconfirmed rumours that this microsoft homestation that is pretty much what the ps2 is, can and will be. this screams of hypocrisy. microsoft has a history of first denouncing a competitor's product and/or ideaology only to duplicate the product and/or service of the said competitor. go figure ...

Wow. That's not even close to true. Infact, none of it is right. .NET is not COM. There is nothing in the IE upgrades that lets you run .NET apps. You still need to install the clr.
jesus. This is slashdot-like fud. You should know better.. it's shameful.

I wouldn't mind a computer to hook to my TV to do that, play music, DVDs, mp3's, etc.
An all-in-one media source would be kinda cool.
