Free Upgrade For $20!
by Steve Gibson, Sep 05, 2001 1:15pm PDTI've been hearing about this for a while from friends and through the grapevine but couldnt ever really find anything about it on the web to point you guys to. Back when Mac OSX came out it touted a few features that werent quite ready (DVD playback, etc) which was promised later in the 10.1 patch. It just recently got interesting though...(Thanks Zoid)
First of all, Steve Jobs introduced Mac OS X 10.1 during the MACWORLD Expo New York keynote last month. Mr. Jobs called it a free upgrade, and said that we would be able to get that update on CD for US$19.95. I wasn't worried at the time, because it was obvious that getting the CDs were going to be an *option*. [snip]Allegedly according to Apple, due to the size of the patch (over 600megs!) They have decided the patch that was announced as free, and includes features that were promised in the original OS and not delivered... will no longer be free. They are going to want $20 a pop for the 10.1 upgrade of their OS. Remember those commercials? You Mac guys remember that speech where OS10.1 was announced as a free upgrade? We've got a Mac with OSX and a DVD player sitting here at the apartment... guess we're gonna have to pay another $20 huh?

Soon as you bought that POS apple 'computer' COUGH. Excuse me, had to hack that flem 'apple' out of my throat.
Why is 'apple' still in business since they went against 'big blue' back in the early '80's?
I honestly dont know... massive cash reserves?

compared to how we're continually rogered by M$ this is hardly worth the hoo-ha now is it?
:)
just make a copy at work or split the price with a few Mac buddies.
Granted... Apple sez the price is simply S&H and the upgrade is essentially free, but $20US for S&H is pretty lame.
Anything over $10 for "S&H" is pretty questionable.

Basically, Apple hasn't been as consumer-friendly as it would like to think.
Example: The G4 Cube. Hailed by magazines as design genius, but there were a few major problems. First of all, it was made of some horrible plastic material that cracked randomly during the manufacturing process... Then there was the "no fan, no noise" promise they made... Except the NVIDIA video card that came with the thing had its own fan. OOPS!!
Also their support is really bad. They have a message board on their web site but they don't actual use it; instead it's for users to answer each others' questions. The search engine for their "Knowlege Base" is awful. Then there's the phone support.
Now, I'm used to nice tech support. I had AOL for a while (shh!) and they had free tech support at an 800 number. Now I have Earthlink DSL, and their tech support is free as well. I could call up a repair shop, and they could help me over the phone.
But alas. If I want help from Apple themselves, I have to give them fifty dollars per incident which basically means that if my QuickTime is fucked up, I give them fifty bucks to make sure it works. If it's a professional program or a difficult problem, they charge two hundred dollars]g.
I don't know how Microsoft does it. It may be worse or it may be better. But either way...
This sucks.
Also: What happened to Apple's devotion to gaming support?

I think that Windows 2000 was a great one, though; I'm still running on no service packs, and the only hotfix I have is to get 128-bit SSL on IE. Win2K is worth the $300 I never spent (I got the CD at a RoadShow back when I was still working at CompUSSR).
