Max Payne Demo!
by Steve Gibson, Sep 05, 2001 9:52am PDTThe playable demo of Max Payne has been released. Couldnt get a mirror going here in time though, sorry guys. At any rate the demo is 130megs and available from a few places which we'll add to the mirror list here as they appear. The demo includes the tutorial as well as the first couple of levels that are in the retail game. You can shoot people and do it in slow motion if you like. I did a Shack preview here if you never really looked at the game for some strange reason. Download locations:

Finally, excitement burst from within me like a beached whale, exploding from dynamite. I installed the software and rubbed my hands together, the heat from the friction of anticipation could start the second Chicago fire.
As I ran down the halls firing away with my pistol, I had a stinging feeling of familiarity, like meeting an ex-girlfriend at a family reunion.
I realized I had already purchased the game weeks ago and had beaten it.

Unfortunately, my time was spent not by madly murdering villains in an orgy of slow motion mayhem, but instead I was forced to laboriously listen to an extended graphic novel featuring putridly purile prose, filled to the brim with overwrought cliches and the mark of juvenile writing: agonizingly awful alliteration. Also, much to my chagrin, the metaphors smashed me over the head like a lead pipe filled with the heavy broken dreams of out of work writers.
Like a pimp to a crackwhore, the similies made me their bitch, breaking down my resistance, savagly subjugating me like a rat in a cage who has learned how to open the door but has been provided no key.
Unable to escape this escapism, my patience as full of holes as a heroin addict's arm, I was finally forced to exit the demonic demo.
Shooting stuff was fun, but being forced to read this juvenile junk placed me in a state of pain.

everything is really fast but even in the main menu when I move the mosue quite often it stops for a fraction of a second. Makes this shit unplayable.
This is Win2k, Athlon 1.4GHz, 640MB RAM, GF2MX, NV drivers 12.41.

it again is there's no way to skip the in-game cinematics. They're AWESOME when you're
on your first run through, but ack...on the second run through they are just like 3 minute
speed bumps all over the place.
There should really be a gameplay mode that's unlocked when you beat the game that let's
you play it with no graphic novel stuff or in-game cinemas. I realize in-game cinemas
could very well be impossible to set to abort, but otherwise the replayability is seriously
hosed for me.

It's arguably the most eagerly awaited demo of all time, and it's big in more ways than one
IS this not a bit of an exageration?
