Pro Gaming... and PPV?
by Steve Gibson, Sep 05, 2001 7:33am PDTHavent seen one of these in a little while. Looks like the mainstream press still has a thing for this whole professional gamer kick. Check out this article talking about Jonathon 'Fatality' Wendel who just recently apparently signed a 6figure sponsor deal according to the article. Pretty ho-hum until you see this line:
Barnes bills Wendel as the first gamer to earn $100,000 in winnings in a single year. He said Wendel just signed a deal that will pit him against an undetermined opponent in a pay-per-view match planned for late fall.Yeah... pay-per-view computer games! That's what we've been missing in this world!
Chatty: Diablo III, Dragon's Dogma
FileShack: Unity of Command, Skyjacker
Daily Filter: Planetside 2, Deadlight
Weekend PC digital deals: strategy-o-rama
38 Studios, Harry Potter Kinect - Shacknews Daily: May 25, 2012
Minecraft for Xbox 360 dev working on 'Adventure' update

Imagine the damage a computer geek could do if he became really good at a game and went pro, then changed his real life name to Jeff K and started really acting like the stereotype, except in real life, and pro gaming became mainstream america entertainment. GOOD HOLY GOD IN HEAVEN NO! I can just see little kids being advertised to by Nike with ads that say "I wanna be like mike JeffK!"

"What's the demographic that watches this?"
"Hoards of slavering self-professed geeks that blow all their money on hardware and are used to watching the best matches for free."
"Hmmm... put it on pay per view."
I've met Fatality, he's a nice enough guy and more power to him for landing a sponsorship doing this shit. Anyone remember a Korean player that came to the CPL a while back under the callsign PowerK? He was sponsored for 30000 per year salary, had a translator, coach, and (I think) a publicist with him at all times, and had to split all his winnings with his sponsor company.
I knew this wasn't far off for American companies, but I didn't expect it AFTER the whole .com crash... and I sure as think PPV will fly like a concrete kite. They shoulda started on ESPN and worked up to PPV. Suits = cluelessly optimistic on the weirdest shit. You can look at it this way though: Fatality is proving for once that it doesn't always have to be the suits fleecing the geek, sometimes it can go the other way. BLEED EM FATALITY!

What poor bastards are these that they need this kind of money? And if it's not for the money then why ppv? Don't they know they're not being nice?
Maybe a big brand/company could use him to advertise a variety of stuff to a niche market: computer things, but also snacks and drinks.

very limited audience, very low public awarness, very low intrest, oh yeah...its something that really isint all the fun to watch, and thoes who want to watch it have an unlimited free supply of content to view.
They wont make back their production costs. Anyways I thought the cable companies had a guaranteed minimum of people who would buy it before they would even air it.

So one thing organizers could definitely mandate for televised tourney games is that all players must play with graphics settings maxed (or something like that). That way, viewers can see the games in all their graphical glory--a fact I think would attract more potential viewers. And the playing field would remain level.
