First Post!

by Maarten Goldstein, Sep 01, 2001 6:27am PDT

So, long weekend for the Americans. Yay? Anyway I am out of things to talk about after this long streak of First Post! posts, so lets get on with the news instead of me boring you. Sander here -
Movie: We're all going to die because you screwed up on the math?! And some work has been done in the comments-on-bord department - added a dthread interface, as well as a reverse-flat interface, and cleaned up various things. Final touches, including dflat, stats and moderation coming later this weekend.

  • Story Time!

Often times I wonder why I decided to pursue computers, of all things. I suppose I could have been a jock, or a bookworm, or any number of things, but I wasn't. I chose to do something that nobody else was doing at that point. I've yet to figure out why, but occasionally, a hint of it will catch my eye, much like a staple stuck in carpet.

Anyway, last night I felt one of those hints. The payoff for putting up with so much crap with my computers.

I had two girls over (both of whom I am just friends with, a thing that I could care to maintain... i.e. no sex0r!! :), and I suggested we should watch a movie. I told them which movies I had, and we finally agreed on "Chasing Amy" (something which none of us had seen yet). It was a DVD, and unfortunately, someone had taken the DVD player somewhere. Luckily, my friend left his laptop at my house, which can play DVDs (and has video out)

So I go about hooking the laptop up to the TV, when I notice that something is seriously b0rked with it (the laptop). I had recently upgraded it to win2k, but I had not upgraded all the drivers yet.

I'm not going to get into the whole ordeal, but it involved hooking it up to a makeshift network that I made with a crossover cable, transferring drivers from my main machine to it, realizing the installers had a bug in them preventing them from working in a directory other than /winnt, and basically just going through a whole lot of shit that only happens to me.

It took me one hell of a long time, but finally, it worked. And we all watched Chasing Amy together, until about 2:00 in the morning. After it was over, we talked about it (and other things) until 4:00 (It was actually intelligent conversation too, and we learned a lot about each other through it). Overall, it was a totally kickass night.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that because I knew how to do all the computer stuff, I made something possible that otherwise wouldn't have been. The alternative to that, is that we would have watched some crappy VHS tape from 1987 and fallen asleep before it was over.

The moral of the story is: There's a reason why you have to put up with bullshit from your computer. It's so you can learn how to fix it.

Okay, this wasn't a very good story. But I felt mighty proud of myself when I got it to work.
