World of Warcraft Announced

by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 31, 2001 8:58pm PDT

We received two emails tonight from people who seemed to have received their Blizzard Insider emails early by accident. In this news letter, Blizzard announced World of Warcraft. Blizzard is supposed to announce a new game at the ECTS show that's starting on Sunday, and this looks to be it. This is what was said about World of Warcraft

During a press conference today at the European Computer Trade Show, Blizzard Entertainment unveiled World of Warcraft, a massively multiplayer, online role-playing game set in the rich fiction of Blizzard's Warcraft universe. Featuring bold 3D graphics and deep, immersive gameplay, World of Warcraft will allow thousands of players to adventure together in this epic setting and will provide them with a new, in-depth perspective on familiar lands, former battlefields, and heroes from the legendary universe. In addition, World of Warcraft will introduce new, uncharted territories and foes never before seen by followers of the series.
The Blizzard Insider page was immediatly pulled after the emails got sent out but someone managed to save a copy here. Thanks siber & Neil. Here's a single small image that comes with the WoW announcement

  • As disappointing as this news might be, a lot of people are probably excited about it. The chances of Blizzard playing a prank on that many fans by pulling their dream game out from under them...pretty slim if you ask me.

For what it's worth on the MMORPG front, I was recently talked into giving Anarchy Online a second chance and have fallen completely in love with the game. Lots of freedom, a neat political situation that affects travel options in various ways, a variety of activities . . . not as much freedom as I would like but enough that you have some room to breathe. And for the first time we have an RPG that's really up to standard graphically with modern action games.

It's still too expensive and the system requirements are WAY too high, but it's stable and fun now. To anyone who was inclined to be interested in it but was turned off for one reason or another, it might be worth a second look.

(I apologize if I have accidentally posted this twice.)

indeego: I didn't recieve an email from Blizzard. I was at the b.net war room forum this morning (aus time) and saw a post by some guy pimping http://www.capceramica.com/wow/wow.htm I noticed the stuff at that URL looked pretty convincing, the WoW screenie, the diablo box set etc, and also that his post had been deleted quickly. For an hour or maybe a bit less, there were several posts on b.net forums about that site and every single one of them was deleted, usually within seconds (literally, seconds). Then, they blocked posting access to all the forums completely, and last time i checked (few minutes ago) that was still the case. So either someone at blizz has messed up royally, and blizz have gone into panic mode, or it's a really l33t hoax.
