Infoworld has an article on AMD's new processor naming plans. They have some examples of what AMD might be coming out with, such as the AMD XP 1500 for the 1.33Ghz Thunderbird and the XP 1800+ for a 1.53Ghz processor. Uhm, yeah.

They're trying to cater to the dumb masses who still think that a 1.5GHz P4 is better than a 1.33GHz T-Bird. Unlike Cyrix, however, they have the proof to back it up.

Personally, I've hated the Athlon name ever since it was coined; that's why I'm always talking about my 1.33GHz T-Bird.

I once told a friend I would never put anything with the XP(tm) logo in it's name on my machine ... I was refering to Microsoft crap but didn't get specific.. so I wonder if that rules out using AMD stuff now too...

Isn't AMD defeating the purposes of the matter by saying what their new rating will be comparable to in Mhz? I mean, they might as well label all their CPUs "AMD XP 1500 (1.33Ghz)".........

For the hordes of naysayers coming out... that's actually the right thing to do... once upon a time no one denoted processor speed (remember the difference between the 8086 and 8086-2?) then came both Intel and MIPS and started putting the MHz speed and boom, everybody decided it was a good idea... does any of you remember how we used to compare processor performance before (Does Wheatstone, MFLOPS, MIPS and Sieve mean something to you?)... I'm sick and tired of the MHz ratings, they're misleading and to say the least, useless... Bring back a comparative performance rating...
