New Blizzard Tease

A new teaser image is up at Blizzard.com. This time the caption is "As the veil of darkness gives way to a new dawn...". This follows yesterday's image that said "In every saga there lies a journey of wonder and imagination". Blizzard will announce their newest game this Sunday at the ECTS show in London, England. Update: Blues News reports of a worldofwarcraft.com domain registered by Blizzard, currently pointing to the same teaser page. Could Blizzard be working on 2 Warcraft products, one of them presumably a MMORPG of some kind?

  • You know, it probably is a MMORPG based in the Warcraft 3 setting. They've changed the game design from 2d to 3d. It stands to reason they could just as easily modify it to make it either a MMORPG. Shit, for all we know it could be a FPS version of Warcraft 3, not even necessarily a MMORPG. Has anyone an inside look into what Blizzard has been doing network wise the last two years?

Even though the graphics point away from Starcraft series, it could be Blizzard trying to be "elusive." Throw you off track. The final picture on Sunday could be these scenes in smoking ruin.

For those that say it can't be another Diablo title... dunno, but I wouldn't discount them trying to milk that cow more.

At anyrate, it's Blizzard so it's bound to be fun, whatever it is.

  • StarCraft: Nope. It won't be. Blizzard officials have already admitted it won't be a StarCraft sequel. They also said they will make a totally new world, which, according to me, sounds like something entirely new. They got Diablo, StarCraft and WarCraft, and those titles are so popular they will sell millions of copies without a doubt. So why not create a new title, which will most likely sell at the same level as well? Just a strategic thought..

FPS title: To be honest, I really don't think Blizzard will make such title in the near future. It's pretty simple to tell why. I think Blizzard wants people to stick to Battle.net, and with a FPS title, you won't be able to use Battle.net the same way, but more like WON.net. I bet Blizzard is looking for a massive online network like Battle.net to expand. A good guess would be that they do a new massive multiplayer game.

But they hired 3D developers: Yes they did. Even a former id Software member is there. However, does that necessarily mean they must develop a fps title? There already are a lot of those, and I bet they'll get too much competition from companies like Epic and id already. The massively multiplayer part and the strategy part is pretty much open for domination. A good reason they won't do a FPS title would also be due to reputation. Blizzard wants the "best-of-developers" label, and as long as they stay to strategy, rpg and massively multiplayer, I bet they are gonna be fine. Remember those can be made in 3D, duh. If they enter the fps market, they might get their ass wooped with Counter-Strike 2 and such, which would be a VERY bad thing for Blizzard. Maybe not economically, that's not the point, but rather reputation-wise.

What I have written up here is what I think of course, and it's pure speculation too.
