Looks like our harddrives will be a lot faster in the next year. A new standard has been reached, Serial ATA. This new ATA standard allows transfers up to 600MB per second and does away with the old ribbon cables.

after overhead and burst speeds it'll probably only get 60mb/sec sustained, which is what I get on my raid 0 setup on my maxtor drives.

old news but anyways, anyways this will be a big improvment over ATA100 not so much because of increased speed (though it will come in handy down the road), but because you have a lot smaller cable, it's a lot simpler (cheaper) to implement, and most of all because you no longer have to deal with 2 drives per channel limits (there are no channels). And it's software compatible with ATA100 so you don't have to upgrade your OS to get it working.

Thank god they are finally doing something about those annoying ribbon cables. I was seriously considering doing one of those silly cable-rounding mods but then I realized that I had a life.

The thing that kills me about this, besids the fact that they've been talking about it for years, is how can a faster cable interface make drives faster? I dont belive that the limiting factor in harddrive speed is the ATA cable, i think it's the spinning disk and moving heads.
