Mods & Violence

by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 28, 2001 1:04pm PDT

Looks like the game violence advocates have something new to complain about, teenage mod makers. That's right, apparently some people are now concerned about minors making mods for games, saying it's the "moral equivalent of teenage pornographers". Thanks Blues. The article does look at both sides, talking to the concerned parties as well as developers and mod makers. Here's a snip

David Walsh, president of National Institute on Media and the Family, a nonpartisan organization that looks at the impact of entertainment on children, contends that underage mod makers are the moral equivalent of teenage pornographers. He thinks the game industry should apply the same rating system used on games to the mods themselves and restrict kids' access to Web sites where mods are posted.
The issue is starting to catch the attention of Congress. "This is a whole new problem," says Dan Gerstein, communications director for Sen. Joseph Lieberman, Democrat of Connecticut. Lieberman is the author of a bill that would authorize the Federal Trade Commission to penalize companies that intentionally market adult-rated entertainment directly to children. But the legislation is finely tailored to address deceptive marketing rather than prohibit kids from making mods for mature-rated games, Gerstein says. [...]

  • Here's an interesting take on this notion...
I'll argue that minors making mods ***IS*** the moral equivalent of "teenage pornographers". This is because, morally, teenagers have as much right to publish nude photos of themselves as they do to write code.

Honestly, if I have the mental capacity to use the self-timer on a camera (or use a webcam or whatever), isn't it a fair guess I'm mentally competent enough to decide whether I want people looking at my bare ass? And is not that ass MY PROPERTY, with which I may do as ***I*** see fit? Doings which might include showing it to people who want to see it as much as I want to show it?

People who rail on about "child pornography" forget that in the eyes of the law, someone who is 17 years and 364 days old is treated the same as someone who is 6 years old. Many teenages actually have brains that work (surprise!) and are fully capable of making their own life decisions, including whether or not to pornograph themselves.

[Heh, I wonder if "to pornograph oneself" is legitimate English ;)]

And don't get me started on the "dangers" of pornography. News flash snooty adults, LOTS of "kids" see porn. And 99.999% of them grow up not to be rapists, molesters, stalkers, blah blah blah, but normal productive members of society. Hell, how many congresscritters in DC do you HONESTLY think never say a dirty magazine when they were young? Wait, bad example...

Anyway, I hope my point is taken...
