@Home Update

The @Home troubles are continuing. The bill collectors are knocking and Excite@Home owes about $50million to a particular investment group. The good news though is this quote from Yahoo which mentions that AT&T owns the company, and if/when things do falter they (AT&T) will inject some cash in to keeping the cablemodems alive.

After all, AT&T clearly still views Excite@Home's broadband business as a vital part of its AT&T Broadband and is unlikely to allow the firm to collapse completely.
So not totally screwed, but those bills you get in the mail might have some different logos on it.

  • Shaw@Home only uses the brand name '@Home' anymore, and the excite@home content (the page if you go to 'www').

    There is a class action lawsuit against Rogers on behalf of all the customers. The reason for this is (it is often misunderstood) that customers are Rogers are continuously billed even when there is an outage, and when they were having major problems they were having outages spanning multiple weeks for some customers. Customers would call in and complain but they would not get refunded. With other ISPs, or at least Shaw@Home, if you experience an outage and it's the ISPs fault, you can call tech support and ask to be refunded for that period. This generally only applies to basic connectivity (not email) and keep in mind before you call, being offline for an entire day is worth a whopping $1.50 or so.
