With NVidia actually releasing a new product 3dfx has to do something right? Well they have another "technology" announcement that comes out from under wraps this evening. Hereis what the ExtremeHW guys sent me:

an update on 3Dfx's latest technology announcement, FXT1 Texture Compression. In a nutshell, it's slightly better than S3TC with an 8:1 compression ratio. Also, it's cross-platform, cross-API, and completely open source.

  • A lot of you guys are confusing the implementation of texture compression, and the usage of large textures in the game.

    If you take Quake3 and force it to run with S3TC, you get... Quake3 just like it was before.

    If you take quake3 and make gigs of textures for it THEN support S3TC, you get to use all those pretty textures without needing 128MB of video memory.

    Don\'t companies just build texture compression into their drivers anyway? Sure UT \"supports\" S3TC, but is that because they had to program S3TC crap into the engine, or is that a PR way of saying they are including another CD full of huge ass textures?

    They go for buzzword #1 with cross-platform. nVidia and s3 are crossplatform too! with support for X11, NT, 9x to name a few. Ok, so thats just a minor one, but they are warming up for the kill!
    Cross-API!! omg, its cross, but not platform, its a new one! I want to see nVidia claiming their T&L unit as cross-api now, just to make it all fair and even. By cross-api they could mean as little as glide and directX, Idont even know if D3D will suport this, I remember something about ms only including one (s3tc) compression tech in DirectX. But lets assume it really is \"cross-api\" its still a steaming pile of marketing. Which leads them to the headshot
    OPENSOURCE! holy christ! THEY DIDNT GO FOR \"SAVING THE WHALES\" OR \"FEED THE CHILDREN\" OR EVEN \"WORLD PEACE\"!! THEY HAD TO DROP THE H-BOMB OF MARKETING! OPEN SOURCE! OMFG!!! YOU MEAN THEY WILL RELEASE THE SPECS FOR THE COMPRESSION SO ANYONE CAN INCORPORATE IT INTO THEIR GAME AND THEN THEY CAN SAY, \"OH, LOOK THIS GAME INCORPORATES *OUR* TECHNOLOGY!!! where is the open sourcing of the circut designs for incorporating this into a chip? it is GPL ofcourse right? YEAH THANKS 3DFX FOR THE MARKETING RIM JOB!!

    Well, heres hope\'n to see what kinda propaganda nVidia will spew about the gheyforce256 in response to this..my bet is a return of prayer to schools!

  • Why can\'t 3dfx just die? Screw them, bloody lack-luster excuse of a company. I\'m happy that on my new puter I\'ll have a TNT2, I hate this card, mostly because 3dfx\'s Banshee drivers are buggy and they dont bother making them work quite properally, at all...

    3dfx generally sucks anyway. Homos, I tell you, Homos! Not that I\'m homophobe or anything, wait... No they can\'t be homos because they make all the colors look dull and crappy... NVidia would be homos then... Matrox even more so... Dear god! The graphics industry is just a bunch of homos!
